We are UK based. It's funny how Italian names can be so regional. I love Rosella but my husband vetoed it as a regional name for somewhere very different to where he is from

If your husband is getting to choose the baby’s surname, it’s only fair that you get to choose the first name.

Unless you a get a veto on the surname ? In that case, give the baby your surname and let your husband choose the first name.

Hmmm, I disagree, I think both parents need to like the first name. Unless you're going to invent a new surname it's a far more limited choice.

I love lots of names that my husband has rejected becasue they're too strongly linked to the 'wrong' region! I think it's most important that the name works well in the country that you'll be living in, but equally I want to know and respect the connotations the name has in the other culture, and in Italy those are often strongly linked to regional identity.

Agree with Lee it is important for both parents to like a name, no one should get a larger say over it imo-the surname debate is an entirely different one I won’t get into lol.

I don't have a problem with the regional thing. I understand it. It's just not something that's an issue in the UK. The name Maria will probably be a middle name. Mary was my nans name and his mum's middle name so it has strong family connections. I really love the name Nora and it's currently top of the list for me. Glad to see so many others like it too

Nora Maria or Nora Mary are lovely choices.

RavenWings · 29/09/2018 12:18

Agree that it's nuts to say "well I'm choosing one name, so na". Both need to like a name.

Anyway:
Bruno - nice
Vincenzo (Vinnie) - like this
Raphael (Ray) - ok
Massimo (Max) - Max is very generic and unimaginative imo so no. I like Massimo though.

Nora - ugh no
Mary/Maria - love these
Vanessa - very pretty

I think I'd use Mary/Maria or Vincenzo.

MikeUniformMike · 29/09/2018 13:22

Bruno- yes but prefer Nero
Vincenzo (Vinnie) - no
Raphael (Ray) - no
Massimo (Max) - not sure
Nora - no
Mary/Maria - really like both
Vanessa - like it

Cosima is gorgeous.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 29/09/2018 14:11

Sorry but I hate Nora with a passion. So ugly and dowdy.

LeeMiller · 29/09/2018 15:37

Cosima is gorgeous.

I agree, but DH claims it's the Italian equivalent of Ethel or Doris!

Kewqueue · 29/09/2018 15:50

I like Nora! I don't really like the other names and I don't see Ray as a nickname for Raffaello.

chewbacca83 · 29/09/2018 16:32

Nora seems a bit like marmite! Either love it or hate it! I see Nora as a really cool name and don't associate it with old ladies at all! But my friend definitely does and she hates it haha.
