Opinions on the name Blair for a girl? I've heard the comment that it sounds like a retching noise 'bleurgh' which kind of put me off!!!

Tony Blair. Bleurgh. Blair Witch Project. Blare as in make an unpleasant loud noise.

moredoll · 29/09/2018 02:34

I like it but it's a boy's name to me too.

Tony Blair hasn't vanished and I think he's going to get more outspoken soon so I wouldn't use it at all just now.

How about Piper? Or Eden?

TheColonelAdoresPuffins · 29/09/2018 09:20

Think there was a girl called Blair in the film Cruel Intentions

Pusheenicorn · 29/09/2018 09:32

Completely and utterly outing myself here but this is my name!!!! I can't believe so many people hate it... lots of people compliment me on it. Actually quite strong venomous opinions on here!

I do think it suits me though, I'm a bit "rock chick" style. Oh and I'm a woman. Late 20s.

I did have the bleeeugh and Tony Blair and Blair Witch growing up, but it never bothered me.

The only problem I have now is that I'm English but live in Scotland and the Scottish pronounce it differently so never understand what I am saying. English people manage fine no bother Grin

Pusheenicorn · 29/09/2018 09:38

Oh actually to be fair, if I have just been emailing somebody and then have to speak to them on the phone or meet them in person they are all very surprised I am a woman. Every time. So I changed my email signature to say Miss Blair xxx xxx because it was getting sodding annoying.

SequinsOnEverything · 29/09/2018 09:42

I like it. My first thought it gossip girl. By the time they are at school none of their friends will think gossip girl or Tony Blair though.

AllRoadsLeadBackToRadley · 29/09/2018 09:45

You will probably get some stick off of people.

I have a Korbyn, named before JC became "famous" and he gets stick because of it

AllRoadsLeadBackToRadley · 29/09/2018 09:47

Sorry- posted too soon!

Not trying to put you off. I like it! But just be prepared.

ShatnersBassoon · 29/09/2018 09:48

I think of Tony and Witch. Not great associations.

PiperPublickOccurrences · 29/09/2018 09:50

It is fairly common in Scotland as a BOY'S name. It is not and has never been a girl's name.

Charley50 · 29/09/2018 09:51

My first thought is 'are you having a laugh?!'

Pusheenicorn · 29/09/2018 10:26

Surely once it's given to a girl, it becomes a girls name. I am a girl and my name is Blair therefore it can be a girls name

LeeMiller · 29/09/2018 15:51

Tony, sorry. It's too soon.

Pemba · 29/09/2018 16:13

Like others say, not in the UK - Tony Blair. Plus it sounds like 'bleurgh', plus it's a surname. So quite negative overall.

2233xylophone · 29/09/2018 16:46

I think it's a lovely boy's name but wouldn't use it for a girl. To me, it's a bit like calling a girl "Thomas" and saying it's now a girl's name, then getting annoyed when everyone assumes they're a boy not a girl.

StatisticallyChallenged · 29/09/2018 18:03

I'm Scottish so I don't have the Tony Blair/bleurgh/etc associations with it - to me it's just a normal name, surname, part of a place name...

I do think of it as more of a male name although I recently considered using it as a middle name for a girl (in honour of a deceased family member) but DH vetoed it for being too boyish

guiltynetter · 29/09/2018 18:04

i love it.

FairfaxAikman · 29/09/2018 18:05

Sorry but it's a traditional Scottish boy's name. You'd get odd looks here if you were a girl with that name.

lottiegarbanzo · 29/09/2018 22:07

Awful.
