So Florence full name shortened to Ren (or could be Wren). I love it but will take opinions! Please be kind..... x

I like it
There are a couple at dd's school
'Florrie' and 'Flo'

NonaGrey · 28/09/2018 08:54

It depends how you feel about the nickname Flo.

Regardless of the diminutive you choose she (or her peers) May switch to Flo or Florry. Make you you are happy with those before using the name.

tlove · 28/09/2018 08:55

Good point.. because I don't like Flo! I would want to just use 'Ren' but feel there should be a 'proper' name behind it too. Thoughts?

I looove the name Florence but I'm not keen on Ren - all I think of is Kevin Bacon dancing round a warehouse Grin obviously this won't be a problem for your DD's age group!

MarthasGinYard · 28/09/2018 08:59

Ren isn't the natural roll off unfortunately

user1499173618 · 28/09/2018 09:00

Ren is a really odd (nickname).

Why don’t you just call her Wren?

GuntyMcGee · 28/09/2018 09:00

Makes me think of Ren and Stimpy, sorry.

NannyR · 28/09/2018 09:01

I don't think Ren works as a diminutive for Florence, maybe it's my accent but the ren part isn't very strongly pronounced or emphasised in Florence.

IHeartKingThistle · 28/09/2018 09:01

I've taught many Flos, a Florrie and a Floss. Ren is fine but bear in mind she may choose to go by something else.

I have a long name but I'm known by a shortened version my mum hates. She doesn't call me it, which is fine, and she's just had to accept it.

Proofer · 28/09/2018 09:04

I don't really think you can force a nickname like this, that doesn't come naturally (like Flo or Florrie). You can call her what you want at home and then when she gets to school it's out of our hands really, unless she goes by Ren as her everyday name and Florence isn't really ever used.

Proofer · 28/09/2018 09:06

Also all the Florences I know go by Flora! Could be an idea?

NonaGrey · 28/09/2018 09:06

If you don’t like Flo then you can’t use it.

What about Renata or Renee? Or just Wren?

BluthsFrozenBananas · 28/09/2018 09:09

Wren on it’s own is a lovely name, no need for Florence at all.

NonaGrey · 28/09/2018 09:10

I should say the reason I made the point about nicknames is that neither of my D.C. have chosen to go by the nickname we used. One prefers the full name only and the other an alternative nickname.

As we love their full names and all the short forms that’s not a problem for us but I always think Hmm when an MNer says they with be called this as a nickname, because really it’s not something you can force on your child.

plumsnet · 28/09/2018 09:33

Ren for Florence feels contrived.

Irena pronounced the European way (Irr-renna) could work with this nickname?

RedDwarves · 28/09/2018 09:40

Wren is a perfectly substantial name on its own.

Ren doesn't work as a shortening for Florence.

SassitudeandSparkle · 28/09/2018 09:44

Nobody will call a Florence 'Ren' as a nickname. If you don't like Flo, don't use it!

tlove · 28/09/2018 12:45

To clarify slightly 'Ren' would be her name and Florence would kind of just be her initials and on passport/birth cert etc. I'm a Charlotte but never ever called that, always Charlie. I just can't stand 'Flo' so maybe I can't use 'Florence' because of that! So sad

Shadow1234 · 28/09/2018 12:56

I personally would name her 'Wren', if you do not like flo, florrie
etc. (Looks nicer than 'ren' )

Wren as a stand alone name is very pretty.

That way, no one (at school/friends) will use the nickname of
Flo, because it has no association with it.

Haworthia · 28/09/2018 12:58

I think Ren from Florence is a bit of a stretch. And if you want to use “Ren” 99% of the time, the fact she’s actually named Florence would probably throw an awful lot of people.

You’d be much better off using Wren.

MrsEricBana · 28/09/2018 12:59

Agree, if it's "Ren" you like then you need to go with Wren or Renee, def not Florence. Ds has a friend called Florence/Florrie - very pretty name but wouldn't call her Ren.

Icklepup · 28/09/2018 13:03

Use Wren

tlove · 28/09/2018 13:03

Maybe it's because my brother's nickname comes from the centre part of his full name (and I would hazard that he is probably the only one in the world with this name!) that I don't find it 'a stretch' at all.. I do like Wren though

OP posts:
llangennith · 28/09/2018 13:05

Nobody's going to shorten Florence to anything but Flo or Flossy.
If you want your child to be called Ren or Wren then think of a name that it's actually a short form of it, or just give that as their name.

tlove · 28/09/2018 13:23

No one would be introduced to her as Florence, but as Ren. So no one would call her Flo because that would be random
