So Florence full name shortened to Ren (or could be Wren). I love it but will take opinions! Please be kind..... x

I do quite like Flossy by I'm sure my husband will hate it!

Could you use Renee or Renée instead? That's a name that hasn't been around for a while. You could easily get Ren from that.

GaraMedouar · 28/09/2018 13:41

Just call her Wren or Renee.

Shadow1234 · 28/09/2018 13:45

As previously stated, just name her WREN. That way, there
will be no flo, flossy, florrie etc.

You do not need a longer name that has to be shortened to
Wren, it is a stand alone name, and a verry prettymone at that!

VodkaRevelation · 28/09/2018 13:47

If you never going to use the name Florence why call her it ‘officially’? Wren is lovely.

tlove · 28/09/2018 13:47

I like Wren. Just so love how feminine Florence is! I'm so annoyed that people call their bloody period 'Aunt Flo' which has ruined 'Flo' for me forever more!

OP posts:
daisypond · 28/09/2018 13:55

But Ren isn't very feminine, though, in my opinion - it doesn't seem to fit with what you like about Florence.

Haworthia · 28/09/2018 13:57

Honestly, if you have no plans to ever refer to her as Florence, I think you’d be mad to actually call her Florence. Don’t you think it would cause issues? Don't you think she might grow up hating people calling her Florence, because it isn’t her name?

Personally, I can’t imagine having a name on my birth certificate that bears no resemblance to the name I’m known by. But then I think it’s weird when children are given names they never use - my nephew goes by his second middle name, for example.

And, accent permitting, the sound “ren” isn’t necessarily there when people say “florence” anyway, so I maintain it’s a stretch.

daisypond · 28/09/2018 14:08

Renata?

Sunflower321 · 28/09/2018 14:22

This is weird imo. You want to name your dd Florence but not call her that and you hate Flo...

Wren is a completely different name. But if that's the sound you like, name her that.

Stuckforthefourthtime · 28/09/2018 14:24

Wren is a lovely name. Or maybe Renata?
Florence is also, but Ren just doesn't sound like a nickname for it.

laseo · 28/09/2018 14:30

I don't think she'd ever be called Ren/Wren, it'd be more natural for other people/herself to call her Flo or even Florrie. The name Wren is nice on it's own and a completely different style to Florence IMO.

Inmyvestandpants · 28/09/2018 14:40

I like Wren. Just so love how feminine Florence is! I'm so annoyed that people call their bloody period 'Aunt Flo' which has ruined 'Flo' for me forever more!

Who gives their period a name? I have never, in 26 years of menstruating, come across that! To me, Aunt Flo is a character out of Bod on telly in the 1970s. I have a Florence, and she's called Flossie, Florrie, Flossance AND FLO. She loves her name - it means "full of life" (From the Italian etymology of the city named Firenze / Florence).

Inmyvestandpants · 28/09/2018 14:47

btw, I really like Wren as a name. It think it sounds delicate but earthy. I don't like Ren as an abbreviation of Florence though - but I agree with your view that if you're going to call your child a nickname, you should do them the courtesy of registering a standard name that they can use in official documents etc. You need to imagine how you would feel getting a solicitors' letter signed "Trixie Smith" or "Boo Johnson" - would you trust this person to handle your legal affairs?

MarthasGinYard · 28/09/2018 14:52

It's a bit like calling a Brenda or Karen 'Ren' IMO

Just doesn't flo

Pardon the pun Grin

lynmilne65 · 28/09/2018 14:53

Have an opinion but since being slated by hq am now afraid to say anything

MarthasGinYard · 28/09/2018 15:00

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 28/09/2018 15:01

Ren looks weird as a nn for Florence. Just call her Wren.

SunshineOutdoors · 28/09/2018 15:03

There was a character in Neighbours called Ren. I think her full name was Serendipity.

Rebellia · 28/09/2018 15:13

Renata?
Renée?

NonaGrey · 28/09/2018 15:17

No one would be introduced to her as Florence, but as Ren

But the school would have her listed as Florence.

The doctor will have her listed as Florence

Any organisations or clubs she joins will have her listed as Florence

Her passport, driving license, pay slips, work email etc will all say Florence.

You aren’t naming a baby, you are naming an adult. She’ll have to live with the formal name you give her whether you use it or not, everyone else will.

n0ne · 28/09/2018 16:37

Ren is a Japanese girl's name - I used to work with one. She said it meant lotus flower in ancient Japanese.

tlove · 28/09/2018 16:57

@n0ne I love it! Ren

I have a Florence and have been known to call her Rency. I have think Ren is a lovely shortening. Me and her dad favour Floss but all her friends call her Flo which is fine by me. Basically I think you should call her Florence and the shorten to Ren. If you don't call her Flo others are unlikely to.

Dionysa · 28/09/2018 19:33

Gorgeous name. I prefer Floss as a shortened version, though. Ren reminds me (as a PP has said) of Ren and Stimpy and post-pub TV!
