We have a little shortlist, and i know it really shouldn't matter, but peoples opinions really do help my decision making. Especilly my parents - who as usual don't like alot of the names we've picked out. So i've turned to the wonderful world of MN. Honest opinions please. Smile

Boys

Lucas, Owen, Jude, Leo ( i like this but DH said its ok for a boy but not a grown man Confused

girls

Poppy, Mila, Lydia, Eva

Boys are all fine, I prefer Jude.
Girls are mostly popular, but I’d use Lydia out of them. It’s a nice name, people know it but it’s not overused.

Sunflower321 · 27/09/2018 10:33

None are my taste, but what names do YOU love?

slippermaiden · 27/09/2018 10:34

I like all the girls names, and all the boys names except Lucas. I will say though they are all really popular and do there will be many children with the same name when they go to school etc. I am a child of the 70s and have a very common name from that time! Hmm

Rebellia · 27/09/2018 10:39

Lucas - rhymes with mucus. Don't like it personally

Owen - quite like this

Jude - I really don't like this as a name. I think it's because Jude is German for Jew, so it reminds me of the yellow Stars of David that the Nazis forced Jewish people to wear in the 1930s, that had 'Jude' written on them in bold black letters.

Leo - I have to say I agree with your husband. I don't think it passes the 'Prime Minister test'. Plus I can't imagine a forty year old barrister/accountant/plumber called Leo. It's cute for a child though - so you like Leonard for a full name?

Rebellia · 27/09/2018 10:43

Poppy - I hate this name. For one thing, it's so common at the moment (along with Alfie), and secondly, I just don't think it sounds very nice - take away the fact that it's the name of a flower for a minute, and just listen to how the name sounds: Popp-ee. And thirdly, like Leo, it's far too babyish for a professional adult.

Lydia - I love this name. I think it's beautiful, classic and amazingly, not too popular. She could easily be the only one in her class.

Mila - don't like it. 1) Pronunciation issues - is it Milla, Meela, Mile-a? 2) if it's Meela, that sounds like 'mealy' to me

Eva - nice but far too overused at the moment. Every other baby girl is an Eve, Eva, Evie, Ava or Edie.

Buddyelf · 27/09/2018 10:44

From your boys list I like Jude the best and from your girls list I love the name Poppy, I think its a beautiful name.

Rebellia · 27/09/2018 10:44

This is unfortunately what the name Jude makes me think of.

Rebellia · 27/09/2018 10:45

So my favourites are Owen and Lydia

AtticaRose · 27/09/2018 11:00

Lucas - love, and I also love Luke
Owen - love
Jude - I associate this with Jude the Obscure - great book but a bit of a sad one. Or Hey Jude. (Very surprised by the previous comments - that association didn't occur to me at all.)
Leo - love. I know a couple of Leos in their 20s and 30s, so I don't think of it as a little-boy name at all. Definitely passes the lawyer/prime minister test for me, as very Latinate.

Poppy - too little-girly for me
Mila - nice but not my taste
Lydia - nice but not my taste
Eva - the nicest of your 4 in my opinion

GMtoBe · 27/09/2018 11:01

Love Owen and Lydia. Both great names. I know someone who has four children and these are the names of two of them.

Westwing1 · 27/09/2018 11:07

Lydia and Owen.

Crunchie14 · 27/09/2018 11:13

Owen and Lydia are my faves - I love Lydia, but can't say I love any of the boys names.
I never even thought of Jude in that way, can't believe I missed that reference, DH is't keen anyway so it's off the list!

I do agree with Leo and Poppy not being for adults, i like the names - but can't imagine using them if that makes sense.

Lucas is Dh's fave but my first thought when i hear it was the same as Rebellia rhyming with mucus!

I haven't yet found a name I love for a boy, except for Ethan, which my brother has just used for his DS Shock

I don't think it passes the 'Prime Minister test'.

Tony Blair named his son Leo while he was Prime Minister. I don’t know what other proof of the test you could possibly need.

CherLooksYoungerThanMe · 27/09/2018 11:28

I love Lydia. It was on my shortlist. Common enough for it not to be unknown, rare enough to not meet many others.

As for your boy list, I like Lucas and Leo. I don't see why Leo is unsuitable for a grown man.

Peachbubble · 27/09/2018 11:31

I like Leo and Poppy the best from your list. I think they're fine names for grown-ups too!

dinosaurkisses · 27/09/2018 11:34

Love love love Owen. Fabulous name.

Your girl’s suggestions are all very popular- especially Eva.

Scatteredthoughtss · 27/09/2018 11:46

Lucas. End sound is ass. Nasty.
Mila - people pronuciation issue. People don't agree.

LydiaLunch7 · 27/09/2018 12:00

Love Leo, love Owen, like Lucas, hate Jude.

LOVE Lydia, like Mila and Eva, hate Poppy.

Creatureofthenight · 27/09/2018 12:03

Owen and Lydia are my favourites too.

Sophronia · 27/09/2018 12:20

Lydia and Owen

ThanksItHasPockets · 27/09/2018 12:21

You could give Leonard or Lionel as full names if you wanted but Leo is a legitimate name in its own right and has been for a very long time - see Saint Leo the Great who was pope during the fifth century.

Marcipex · 27/09/2018 12:29

Leo and Lydia are my favourites from your list.

Really don't like Jude, partly because of the yellow stars, and partly because I know one called Judy. (People will come on to say that their Jude is never called Judy, but...)

AnyaMoondial · 27/09/2018 12:44

Owen and Eva are my favourites. Both really lovely.
