Elea - Joy

Hello everyone, my husband and I are fixed on a name if the baby is a boy but can't decide if it is a girl. I love the name Elea - Joy or Nova - Joy What do you think of either of these suggestions? I love the thought of a double barrell name as when the child grows and their personality starts to show they will start looking more like a ''Joy'' or more like an ''Elea'' then we would just use that name, if that makes ANY sense! I am on the fence only because I wonder if people would struggle with the pronunciation of Elea (Eleya) and because in practice does anyone actually USE double barreled names! All ones I know seem to use the double barrel at the start then the name gets shortened later on (although maybe for the reason I stated?) SO sorry if this is hard/annoying to read, my keyboard is not letting me use all the keys!

i like elea-joy. although when she grows older and starts school, she will probably only get called one of the 2 names.

wildewillow · 24/09/2018 17:20

Elea - ok
Nova - my dogs name, love it
Joy - nice as a middle name.

Drop the double barrel it's chavvy and people will get fed up of it in school/appointments.

Cosmoa · 24/09/2018 17:27

I would just go for Nova! I don't think she will end up being called Joy when she's older.. You will probably not use Joy either to be honest. Nova is a beautiful name on its own!

PatriciaHolm · 24/09/2018 17:30

I wouldn't know how to pronounce Elea, and certainly wouldn't say Eleya - probably El-lea? And yes, I think she'd mostly end up being called one of them, as it's a bit of a mouthful.

TeddyIsaHe · 24/09/2018 17:31

Don’t double barrel the first name, it’s horrible. Joy is a beautiful middle name and works well with either of those names.

RollsEyes · 24/09/2018 19:29

I think my eyesight may be failing, but I read Elea as Flea. Sorry!

Glumglowworm · 24/09/2018 19:34

I wouldn’t know how to pronounce Elea, I was reading it as Eh-Leah. I don’t like the way it looks. Eh-lay-ah is ok but I wouldn’t spell it Elea. Double barrelled is awful. I would use Joy on its own

trevthecat · 24/09/2018 19:37

Elea is my daughter's name. We pronounce it e lay ah. It was my Nona's name. I love it.

DramaAlpaca · 24/09/2018 19:38

I'd use Joy on its own. It's a beautiful name. I don't like hyphenated first names much, nobody will know how to pronounce Elea (which autocorrects to Flea Confused) and Nova is a car.

mummadave · 24/09/2018 19:40

What Drama said.
Nova is a car.
Double barrelled first names are chavvy.

NannyR · 24/09/2018 19:42

I've never heard of Elea before, my initial thought on how to pronounce it would be E-Leah.

taichii · 24/09/2018 19:50

I wouldn't be sure how to pronounce Elea - but I like it pronounced (eh - lay - a)

Nova is a lovely name.

I also agree that double barrelled names are chavvy now, they're far too overused as well.

viques · 24/09/2018 19:52

rollseyes me too! I think the spelling Elaya is prettier, easier to pronounce and will cause her less grief in years to come. Joy is a lovely name. But drop the hyphen. Nova is a nono from me too. Why call your child after a car. You might as well cal her Cortina, or Seat. The only acceptable car/child names are Mercedes and Guilietta.

NotANotMan · 24/09/2018 20:01

Definitely drop the hyphen. Joy for a middle name is nice and I love the name Nova.

Shadow1234 · 24/09/2018 22:51

Agree with other poster, Elaya is a better spelling if thats how you want it to be pronounced. (Would save any confusion). Love the name though, very pretty.

Thank you everyone, some really constructive feedback and has given me food for thought.
