A friend of mine was going to name her baby daughter Scarlett but her family really put her off. They said the name has got really common and whereas in the past it used to sound nice, it now just sounds "nasty and cheap". They've totally put her off using it which I think is such a shame as she really loved it. I'm not trying to convince her to name her daughter Scarlett - she can name her whatever she wants, of course! But she just seemed so disappointed and deflated about her family's reaction so I thought I'd ask you guys what you thought. So Scarlett - what sort of person do you think of when you hear this name? I imagine someone beautiful and vivacious, like Scarlett O'Hara. Do you like it?

I think it's become very common. My DD (age 12) had 3 Scarletts in her class at one point.
It also makes me think "scarlet woman" so I'm surprised anyone uses it!

Love the name Scarlett but had two boys.

Sunflower321 · 17/09/2018 10:27

I don't like it.

Shadow1234 · 17/09/2018 11:43

I love the name scarlett, and it may depend where you live as to
How popular it is. I just asked my son if there were many in
His school and he said he doesnt know of any in his senior
School.

I wonder if Scarlett Moffatt has put them off the name?

daisypond · 17/09/2018 12:46

It's fine, but I do think it's a little downmarket. I always imagine someone with a bright red face as well - scarlet with embarrassment - which doesn't help.

Sophronia · 17/09/2018 14:39

I’m not keen.

ReginaPhalange89 · 17/09/2018 22:40

Not overly keen but it's not awful! I only know one and she's about 10/11, lovely little girl to be fair

Picknickers · 17/09/2018 22:56

I'm not keen because it gets shortened to Scar which is horrible.

YolandiFuckinVisser · 17/09/2018 22:59

I know a Scarlett, she is age 30 approx. She's lovely and it suits her.

DramaAlpaca · 17/09/2018 23:16

It's not my sort of name.

kiltedsheep · 17/09/2018 23:34

I think vivacious, exciting, possibly slightly wild - so it's a big yes for me. Although I think the fact it would inevitably be shortened to 'Scar' would put me off. And it does seem to be more of a grown-up's name than a little girl's name.

Btw I love Scarlett Moffatt. Do people really think the name is 'cheapened' just because she's all over the telly?! 🧐

abos · 18/09/2018 18:48

I'm not keen on the name but it isn't awful!

daisypond · 18/09/2018 19:08

I've never heard of Scarlett Moffatt!

SoyUnPerdedor2 · 18/09/2018 23:23

I always wondered why
Charlotte and
Scarlett
Always rhymed!

I like scarlett as it's more unusual than Charlotte.
And I love letty as a nn.
(I think letty is Arabic? Meaning pretty?)
