Hello everyone,

Me and my partner have been really struggling to find a baby name that we both like. We finally found one that we both like and that has meaning- Woody. It means something to me as it's my Dad's nickname and has been for decades (surname is Woodruff) and my partner likes it because it's unusual. What do you guys think?

Thanks :)

I'd use it as a middle name.
I think he'll be teased for it.
Mind you, I have an unusual name and grew up to like it despite being teased at school so if you like it then go for it!

DC06 · 11/09/2018 23:14

Tbh I think your ds would get teased mercilessly if he were named Woody. Its original but not practical as a name x

Sunflowerr · 11/09/2018 23:25

We used to call erections woodies. Don't know if kids still do.

I think it's cute for a nickname but would choose a different actual name.

Names I like are

George
Nathaniel
Abel
Aris
Blair
Ruaridh
Cailean

I think the sentiment is lovely but it's a silly name. Fine as a middle name/ pet name but first name, no. Screams toy story.

EthelThePiratesDaughter · 11/09/2018 23:48

Makes me think of erections.

Goostacean · 12/09/2018 00:28

Inclined to agree with pps, unfortunately! I know a Woody but it’s due to his surname - Wood. What other names did you like, maybe we can help with other ideas?

BackforGood · 12/09/2018 00:34

Really don't like it.

A nickmname adapted from your surname by your mates is a completely different thing from it being your proper name.

ReginaPhalange89 · 12/09/2018 01:39

Sorry I don't like it either

Jeippinghmip · 12/09/2018 01:41

Dreadful 🙀

SuperstarDJ · 12/09/2018 03:08

It’s slang for erections where I’m from.

However it never seems to do Woody Harrelson any harm. Zoe Ball also has a soon called Woody I think. There’s also Woody Allen but the less said about him the better.

GinIsIn · 12/09/2018 03:42

Awful! If you want a connection, how about Wilson? Like Woodrow Wilson?

Quangot · 12/09/2018 07:44

I don't like it, sorry.

Sunflower321 · 12/09/2018 07:49

A woody in your pants Shock! You really can't call a child that.

Lookingforadvice123 · 12/09/2018 10:35

Some friends of ours named their son Woody. I think it's awful, sorry. Everyone I've mentioned it to immediately jumps to the erection conclusion, including me, even though it's not a phrase I've ever used.

If you love it, go for it. But you'll get lots of raised eyebrows and he might be teased when he's older.

PolkerrisBeach · 12/09/2018 10:36

Please don't.

SoyDora · 12/09/2018 10:38

Yeah, a woody was an erection in my youth!

dancingbee · 12/09/2018 11:07

I think they'd probably hear a lot about Toy Story in primary school and then have to deal with erection jokes in secondary. I've known people nicknamed Woody due to their surname but I don't think it works as a first name.

Witchofgoss · 12/09/2018 11:11

My cousin is Woody, but he's Edward on his birth certificate.

BevBrook · 12/09/2018 11:14

Googling to see what Woody Allen's name is short for I found it is Heywood - well I never knew that. I assumed it was Woodrow like Woody Guthrie. It's not even the name he was born with, he changed it from Allan Konigsberg. Hoping that comes up on a pub quiz now.

Sunflower321 · 12/09/2018 12:15

Woody is awful.

Why would a lovely name like Edward be shortened to Woody, especially as it's not Edwood! I'd encourage Ed as a nickname.

LMDC · 12/09/2018 12:24

There's a youtuber called Rebecca Lamb who has a son named Woody. I thought it was wacky at first but now when his name is spoken you don't bat an eyelid. If you like it, go for it - people will get used to it.

Liquoricelake · 12/09/2018 13:32

It's terrible.

Aprilshowersnowastorm · 12/09/2018 13:35

Howdy..
..

Aquamarine1029 · 13/09/2018 12:32

Omg it's awful. Truly. Please don't do this to your child.

madeoficecream · 13/09/2018 12:34

I would not use it as it does sound like slang for erection!
Can you not just use Woodruff?
