Opinions on the name Bambi for a girl?
We love it but would expect some negative opinions so just looking for thoughts Smile

I actually knew someone called Tinkerbell once. Her birth name was something entirely normal but she changed it to Tinkerbell by deed poll. Mind you, her boss thought it sounded stupid and unprofessional and told her not to say her name when she was answering the phone. I can imagine Bambi being viewed in much the same way.

I know two Candys, both short for Candice.

MikeUniformMike · 11/09/2018 20:12

How about Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella or Rapunzel?

MikeUniformMike · 11/09/2018 20:18

sorry Snow White, you're on the list too.

MikeUniformMike · 11/09/2018 20:20

Given that surnames are popular, how about Bamber?

LesLavandes · 11/09/2018 20:21

Just nooooo

Nanasueathome · 11/09/2018 20:22

I quite like Thumper myself

amy85 · 11/09/2018 21:03

No just no

SemperIdem · 11/09/2018 21:06

It’s ridiculous as a given name.

The only person I know called Bambi is Male. It is a nickname he’s acquired due to his lolloping “baby deer” way of walking. Meant good naturedly and taken in good spirits but even so.

SemperIdem · 11/09/2018 21:07

Mike

Is Jeremy Bamber still alive? He might be touched to be a namesake.

ozymandiusking · 11/09/2018 22:02

For God's sake don't be ridiculous!

vampirethriller · 12/09/2018 09:38

No it's terrible sorry.
(I once knew a part time drag queen who went by Bambi Dextrous.)

OhTheTastyNuts · 12/09/2018 12:38

Bambi's (female!) cousin in the original book is called Faline, if you are considering other options along the same lines.

Cousinit · 12/09/2018 12:45

This is a joke isn't it?

Sunflower321 · 12/09/2018 14:44

Bambi, Teddy, Woody... some of the recent name suggestions make you wonder whether people are naming stuffed toys or real people!

HPLikecraft · 12/09/2018 14:56

It's nothing like Teddy... that was a name (diminutive at least) long before the toy bears.

Bambi is ridiculous as a given name. Though admittedly rather lovely as a nickname.

Sunflower321 · 12/09/2018 14:59

It may have been a name for a long time, but nowadays Teddy is very much associated with the plush bear, just like Bambi is a cute deer.

Ontopofthesunset · 12/09/2018 15:19

As far as Teddy goes, I suppose you could associate it primarily with a stuffed toy if you weren't familiar with the legions of people called Ted or Teddy - Ted Hughes, Teddy Kennedy, Teddy Sheringham, Ted Danson, Ted Heath, Ted Cruz, my own Great Uncle Ted, not to mention Teddy Roosevelt after whom the toy was named. It's not remotely similar to Bambi which was created as a name for a fictional animal.

florascotia2 · 12/09/2018 16:02

There are two suggestions usually given for the origin of 'Bambi'.
In both cases, it's a name - or a nickname - invented by a novelist.

One is Bambi the male deer, as mentioned by previous posters. He first appeared in a 1923 novel by Swiss writer Felix Salten, and then in the Disney film.
The other Bambi is a short form of a nickname 'Bambina' (= 'little girl' in Italian ); it first appeared in a 1914 American novel. In that book, Bambi's real name is Francesca.

So, ignoring the male/Disney connection, calling a child 'Bambi' would be the equivalent of calling him/her 'little girl'. That's a bit generic, surely, and not suitable for an adult. IMHO, Francesca is nicer.

Chocolatedeficitdisorder · 12/09/2018 20:32

Oh deer no.

Have you considered Bimbo? It has a similar sound.
