So after much deliberation and a short list of 3 for each gender DH picked the girls name for DC1, I picked the boys... she was a girl and I now adore her name- Niamh.

So with DC2 on the way we are again back to looking at names. Thoughts on these possibilities please:

Boys:
Thomas
Sebastian
Finley

Girls:
Orla
Ava
Edie

Just after some thoughts as we have enjoyed browsing the threads to aid our decision!

I think Orla goes best with Niamh for girls. Both beautiful Irish names, but distinct enough in sound that they don't sound twee together.

Edie has the same 'Ee' vowel sound, so I think it is too similar sounding to Niamh, but it's also a very different style of name - Niamh is Irish, Edie is not; Niamh is a full name, Edie is a nickname for Edith.

Ava I like but it is so popular right now - there are so many little Eve's, Eva's, Ava's, Ada's and Evie's. It's the new Olivia/Emily so your child would be one of several. Plus, I think 'Niamh and Ava' is a bit of a tongue twister with the two 'v' sounds - it starts sounding like 'Neeva Nayva'.

For boys, I love the names Thomas and Sebastian.

Not so keen on Finley, though I like Finn by itself (and I think Niamh and Finn sound good together). Personally, I think of Finley as a slightly chavvy name, and far too cutesy for an adult.

Finley or Edie

TroubledLichen · 04/09/2018 04:38

Sebastian or Orla are my favourites. I also like Thomas and Ava, although Ava is very popular. I’m not wild about Edie, whilst it’s a nice enough name, to me it sounds like it should be short for something (like Edith?). I can’t stand Finley.

Niamh & Orla sounds perfect ! Edie doesn't flow as well although it's a nice name on its own ! Ava is lovely but so so common now.

Niamh & Finlay sounds nicest from the boys. Although I also prefer Finn like a pp suggested

Other suggestions -
Phoebe, Freya, Aoife, Ivy
Zac, Max, .... Sorry I'm crap at boys names lol

Thetimehascometo · 04/09/2018 21:41

@Reginaphalange89 I love Aoife but with the fun we have had with Niamh (I thought it was a more common Irish name) I don't think we will go with it.

Favourites so far: Nymph, Naomi, Nemo, Nee-am-huh. 😂 poor kid!

I really don't think Aoife is that uncommon nowadays,. think it's one of the more well known Irish names actually!
I liked it with my first pregnancy 7 years ago and I don't think it was as known, my OH hated it, hed never heard it before lol

@desmondswayne weirdly we were down to thomas and Sebastian when choosing names for DC1, then she was a girl so it didn't matter.

I do think my heart is set on Thomas for a boy 😍
