How do you pronounce Joseph?

DH and I have called our newborn baby son Joseph, which we pronounce "JO-siff". However, I've noticed that most other people say "JO-ziff", and I wondered if it was a dialect thing or just personal preference. How do you say Joseph and where are you from? I'm in SE England.

My husband was Jo Seff
I’m Midlands too

The difference is which sound you make in the middle : s or z.

Fireba11 · 31/08/2018 17:41

Both Grin

Not just the S or Z people are also confusing the E with and I sound - very odd

VeryBerryAugust · 31/08/2018 18:02

Isn't that just the Yorkshire folk?

It's not actually that odd in English. There are quite a few occasions where e is pronounce as a short I (the /ɪ/ sound), such as packet, rocket, singlet, corset, roses, noses, etc.

Joseph is like that.

sirlee66 · 31/08/2018 18:18

Oh never thought about it because t I actually say both! Bit like I change scone (scone rhymes with gone and scone rhymes with home!)

VeryBerryAugust · 31/08/2018 18:21

I have heard kids using "Jofus"!

mathanxiety · 31/08/2018 20:09

Isobel is Izz-uh-bel for me. Very inconsistent.
And Isadora is Izz-uh-dora, come to think of it.
But Josephine is Jo-sef-een...

Jesus is Jezuz to me. No S sound there at all.

English really is a funny language.

GreenTulips · 31/08/2018 21:44

such as packet, rocket, singlet, corset, roses, noses, etc.

Would you believe Birmingham?

Given that we're talking about you pronouncing things differently to most other people... yes I would Grin

Smidge001 · 31/08/2018 21:58

BackforGood · 31/08/2018 23:50

GreenTulips · 01/09/2018 00:14

I'd also get the buzz

But I did have elocution lessens (or is that less-uns/ins?)

CommanderDaisy · 01/09/2018 00:16

Jo Seph = Jo Seff

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 01/09/2018 00:18

Jo-siff perfect RP!

applesauce1 · 01/09/2018 00:19

I asked this question to my husband, but spelled out the name so as not to guide him.

He replied confidently, "Jessop".

He's worse at spelling than I'd previously assumed. 😂

Holidayshopping · 01/09/2018 00:21

I’m in the SE and it’s said ‘JoZiff’ round here.
