How do you pronounce Joseph?

DH and I have called our newborn baby son Joseph, which we pronounce "JO-siff". However, I've noticed that most other people say "JO-ziff", and I wondered if it was a dialect thing or just personal preference. How do you say Joseph and where are you from? I'm in SE England.

I have a Joseph and pronounce it "Jo seff". I'm in the South East.

NynaeveSedai · 30/08/2018 18:59

JO-zeff. South west. Definitely a zeff not a ziff or a siff.

WillowRose79 · 30/08/2018 19:00

My brothers Joseph and my mum always made a point of saying it's Jo Suff

Fink · 30/08/2018 19:01

I've only ever heard one pronunciation. I'm not sure which of yours it would sound like (although it definitely doesn't have a z sound in it so probably the first one). Could you do an IPA transcription or link to an audio recording, I'm quite curious to heat what the other one would sound like.

ReservoirDogs · 30/08/2018 19:02

LittleBookofCalm · 30/08/2018 19:04

or is it Joziff
hmm

Pythonesque · 30/08/2018 19:08

I've been murmuring it under my breath trying to work it out! I think I probably go with the "s" sound most of the time but might veer towards a "z" sometimes too, so I'd say in between. I doubt I'd normally notice which version someone else was using. SE England crossed with Australian upbringing.

I personally dislike "us" with a "z" in it so I can understand why you are asking!

Cel982 · 30/08/2018 19:09

I'm Irish and would say it with an S rather than a Z, but both pronunciations are pretty common in my experience.

IVflytrap · 30/08/2018 20:26

Jo-ziff. I grew up in Essex.

I'm now a couple of counties away, in Norfolk, and people generally say Jo-zuff or maybe Jo-suff.

OutPinked · 30/08/2018 20:41

Jo-ziff (from Leeds.)

OutPinked · 30/08/2018 20:42

Not necessarily true, my brother is 19 and still Josef. I work with a Joseph too.

Doilooklikeatourist · 30/08/2018 20:43

Jo Zeff ( Wales)

MrsMolehillMountain · 30/08/2018 20:44

Jo-ziff

But weirdly, if I were to say 'Mary and Joseph', I'd say 'Jo-siff'

Unhelpful I know!

It's a fantastic name though OP an regardless of pronunciation, you should go for it

ScreamingValenta · 30/08/2018 20:45

fattyboomboomboom · 30/08/2018 20:46

I have one - Joe-seff - London.

I've always called him Joe but now he is an adult he uses Joseph. Never, ever Joey Bleurgh.

Parttimewasteoftime · 30/08/2018 20:51

Jo seff also from SW. My DS asked his female nursery teacher called Jo if it was short for Joseph 😂 He still prefers Joseph good choice op he will get confused at nativity time when Charlie/Olly or Sam is Joseph.
