Partner thinks name is too feminine for boy

Hi,

We're struggling to name
No. 3. It's going to be a boy and I really like Inigo but my partner thinks it's too feminine and pompously middle class... I don't see this and tbh, I don't want an overly masculine name either.

Boys are SO much harder to name!

I agree with him

IfyouseeRitaMoreno · 29/08/2018 10:12

Well it’s not that it’s feminine but that it’s too unusual and might therefore seem pretentious, as well as give your poor lad troubles in explaining it to people.

So I tend to agree with your DH.

Lweji · 29/08/2018 10:12

Inigo is not female!!!

Not sure even middle class.

But it's likely that he'd have many people saying:
"I didn't kill your father" Wink

AuntieStella · 29/08/2018 10:13

It doesn't really matter why he dislikes the name, he does. So it's back to the drawing board.

Has he suggested any names he likes?

NonaGrey · 29/08/2018 10:13

It doesn’t really matter what we think about the name if your partner doesn’t like it. He gets to veto names just as you do.

You just have to keep going until
You find something you both like.

There’s quite a lot of ground between overly masculine and overly feminine.

Justwanttoweeinpeace · 29/08/2018 10:13

As in Princess Bride?

How is it pronounced?

These are the questions he will endlessly be asked.

schopenhauer · 29/08/2018 10:14

It definitely sounds a bit pompous to me, sorry. And slightly feminine I guess though that’s not such an issue.

schopenhauer · 29/08/2018 10:15

And I agree if your partner doesn’t like it you can’t have it really. Same as if you don’t like his suggestions.

Chalkybee · 29/08/2018 10:16

Never made the connection with princess bride.

We're both looking for an uncommon name, so not worried about that aspect.

I'm gonna have to give up on it aren't I 🙈

Well if he doesn't like it then you need to think of a few more choices.

IfyouseeRitaMoreno · 29/08/2018 10:18

It’s grown on me a bit after finding out about Inigo Jones, the architect who introduced roman architecture to the uk.

However, it’s still a bit out there and if your DH doesnt like it I think you have to accept it.

Veto sounds good though Wink

NonaGrey · 29/08/2018 10:20

Yes you are going to have to give up on it, he doesn’t like it.

I’m sure you’ll find something else that’s even better.

IfyouseeRitaMoreno · 29/08/2018 10:21

If you like Spanish sounding names what about Aldo?

Bestseller · 29/08/2018 10:25

I don't know if it's feminine or not but it is odd and a bit try hard. If DH feels that ways others will too and you'll have saddled DS with it for ever, except you won't because DH doesn't like it so you can't use it.

NordicNobody · 29/08/2018 10:31

I don't know how it's pronounced but in my head it sounds like someone saying Indigo with a bunged up nose. I don't think it's "too feminine" but I can't say I'm a fan, sorry.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 29/08/2018 10:49

Not keen OP, sorry.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 29/08/2018 10:57

I like it and personally don't think it's feminine.

Oly5 · 29/08/2018 10:58

I agree with your DH

halcyondays · 29/08/2018 11:03

I don't think it's feminine, but it is quite pompously middle class.

HereBeFuckery · 29/08/2018 11:07

I love it, pronounced IN-I go, not in-I-go. Unusual, with great history and associations and not another Mattie/Lucas/Charlie/Milo.

BellBookandCandle · 29/08/2018 12:19

I like it - not sure how a name can be pompous or middle class! Does he mean people will assume he is a pompous middle class bore which is why he's veto'd the name? If so that's a whole different argument!

As well as Inigo, I like Jolyon, Julian, Javier/Xavier and Cosmo - all of which I presume your OH will not like Smile

Have you thought about Arlo or Milo - probably still quite well used, but nice names all the same. Similar sound to Inigo but maybe more mainstream for his tastes?

TatianaLarina · 29/08/2018 13:15

Inigo isn’t even slightly feminine, it’s Spanish.

The inverted snobs of the forum always object to people who don’t know their place, but if OP is middle class I don’t see how they can object to a middle class name. Why they’d object if she’s not God only knows.

What about Sholto, Milto, Cosmo, Orlando?

Chalkybee · 29/08/2018 13:30

OH's favourite suggestion so far was Bear, so he's not adverse to out there names!

I love Arlo, he doesn't. Cosmo has been considered, but neither of us were keen. I quite like Milo but it makes me think of the Tweenies 😂🙈

I think it's back to the drawing board...
