Ttc at the moment but already set on a girls name. Just curious as to how people think it's best spelt Smile

100% Niamh

SnowBambino · 29/08/2018 18:34

Neve. A perfect name all of its own. Niamh if you’re Irish though.

musmusculus · 29/08/2018 19:13

I know a Niamh (Irish) that says it with 2 (almost with a ‘the’ on the end. 3 it certainly is not! 1 agree.

orangeunicorn · 29/08/2018 19:36

Oh that's silly of me, duhBlushI know I split it into three but I was just showing how I pronounce it, I don't say it with 3 syllables at all. I'd say when I say it, it's one syllable like pps have said.

I was showing what sound, not syllables...if that makes any senseBlush

Niamh or Eve.
That's my vote

GhostPerfume · 29/08/2018 19:40

Niamh

ShowOfHands · 29/08/2018 19:51

Don't worry op. I think most people understood that n ee v was a phonetic rendering of a one syllable pronunciation.

Go with Niamh.

BlessedImelda · 29/08/2018 19:54

Niamh. Also Munster, so ‘Neve’ doesn’t represent my pronunciation of it at all.

BonnieF · 29/08/2018 19:56

Niamh is the correct spelling.

Mis-spelled Celtic names are slightly ‘the opposite of posh’.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 29/08/2018 19:57

I had a class last year with 3 girls, each named one of the different spellings.

None of them pronounced it any differently to the other, so Neve can be said like Niamh if you so wish, because they certainly did.

Yika · 29/08/2018 19:59

I actually like it spelt Neve. (And I (English) would pronounce Neve and Niamh exactly the same.)

zeeboo · 29/08/2018 20:00

Niamh is the only actual spelling of Niamh. HTH.

DailyMailFail101 · 29/08/2018 20:01

I like Niamh best but I’ve since found out after having two children with slightly different names people are stupid so you may want to spell it phonetically. DS1 is named Bryn I honestly didn’t envisage having problem but people call him all sorts ‘Brine’, ‘Brian’ ‘Brea’ ‘sorry I don’t even know how to pronounce that’ it’s astonishing!

beforeihit30 · 29/08/2018 20:02

Just on the ‘nieve’ pronunciation as I saw comments on this, on the off chance you come across a fair few Spanish speakers in your life then it doesn’t sound similar. It sounds like ‘nee-eh-beh’.

I like Niamh Smile always have done, but I’m from a Scottish family with Irish roots so I’m partial to a Celtic/Gaelic name.

cariadlet · 29/08/2018 20:19

Niamh

It's a lovely traditional Irish name so deserves the proper Irish spelling.

Whenever I see alternative spellings for names it makes me think that the parents must have heard the name, liked the sound of it, didn't have a clue how to spell it so made up their own spelling.

TamiTayorismyparentingguru · 29/08/2018 20:45

Niamh - every day of the week.

We didn’t choose any traditional Irish names for DC because I knew that DH’s family (he’s English) wouldn’t just spell/pronounce them wrong, but they would also go on and on and on and on... about it for years. (I have a teen now and I can guarantee that if we’d given him an Irish name they’d still be commenting on it now!)

There was no way I was going to choose a name with a correct spelling and then spell it wrong - just to keep other people happy.

(Typically - one of DH’s sisters then had a child and called her Neave! WTF?!)

Aaarrrggghh · 29/08/2018 20:55

I know Niamh is Neev, but I pronounce it in my head a Nee-am-eh?! Why?! It's a beautiful name and I love it. That's why I couldn't use it though. Does anyone else do this? 😂

Eemamc · 29/08/2018 21:09

Niamh is a beautiful name. Definitely go with that.

starcrossedseahorse · 29/08/2018 21:12

Niamh. It's not an unusual name (it's lovely too!) so I cannot imagine people now knowing how to pronounce it.

WeeM · 29/08/2018 21:15

Niamh, cos that is how you spell it...I’m not a fan of changing traditional names either. It’s popular in Scotland too, was on my shortlist.

Sunflower321 · 29/08/2018 22:26

I know Niamh is Neev, but I pronounce it in my head a Nee-am-eh?!

Me too! It's not an easy name to learn to spell!

kenandbarbie · 29/08/2018 22:30

Niamh

sukieinthegraveyard · 29/08/2018 23:20

Niamh.

My daughter is called Niamh and her Grandma is Irish.

I think it is a beautiful name, made more magical by its spelling. The few times people have called her "Neem" by mistake has just made me chuckle tbh as who would want to call their child Neem?!

trancepants · 30/08/2018 00:23

Neve will be mostly assumed to be pronounced nev.
