Lots of good suggestions already.
I'd only say that having the same first initial is something to he avoided - we have father and son with same initial, and now that DS is an adult it's a right pain with things like medical and finance letters. No privacy for either of them!

Other suggests on traditional, not starting with a J and not easily shortened-

James and John are both great names. I never really get the problem about having the same initial, 4 generations of my family all have names beginning with J and it’s never been an issue (among them are 2 called James and 2 called John too!)

I like John, Niall and quite like Evan. Not keen on Rory.

James and John go well together. I did think of the apostles but not anything negative.
