How many baby Asher's do you know?

Baby boy is due in a few weeks and after really struggling to find a name DH and I both like we thought we were finally settled on Asher (middle name will be Jack) but we've now found out Asher was apparently the most popular boys name of 2017 Confused

We had no idea the name had become so popular. DH thinks we should use it anyway but I was one of five girls in my class at school with the same name and hated it so I'm having a wobble.

So what do you think? Is it too popular? Should we go back to the drawing board?

None and I work with children. There was an Asher I met last year but he was 6 years old and I remember thinking how unique his name was. I love it.

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 26/08/2018 15:04

From where do you get your stats? Has the ONS baby list been published?

Touchnotthiscat · 26/08/2018 15:05

Only one and he’s 6. Gorgeous name. I don’t think it will be that popular.

Tefiti2 · 26/08/2018 15:05

None - could that be an American article you’ve read?

StuckInTheMiddleWithJude · 26/08/2018 15:07

None.

I'd be really surprised if it's most popular name of 2017, it was number 288 in 2016 and I believe 2017 stats are realised in a few weeks.

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 26/08/2018 15:10

Yes, 288th last year. Can't see it making no. 1 somehow.

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 26/08/2018 15:15

I used to work in a nursery with two Hindu little boys called Asher.

It was this article. Maybe it's not accurate?

I work with under 5's. I know one. It's on my long list of names with the bonus being (or so I thought!) that it's not too common. I thought Jack, Oliver etc were top.

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 26/08/2018 15:20

That's interesting, chocolate as I didn't realise it was also a Hindu name, baby book said it was Hebrew in origin I think.

I know two under 4. I work with kids though so generally I don't think it's that popular yet.

Greeneyedgeek83 · 26/08/2018 15:21

None at all and it's a lovely biblical name

Rainshowers · 26/08/2018 15:23

None and I have a 4 year old DD (I’ve seen the class list for her new class, none there and none at her current nursery ), and a 6 month old.

Rainshowers · 26/08/2018 15:23

Meant to add, I really like the name! Just the right balance of unusual but not crazy!

Peachbubble · 26/08/2018 15:24

None

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 26/08/2018 15:26

Just the right balance of unusual but not crazy!

That's what we were hoping. I work with kids and it's made the name choosing process so much more difficult as every name DH suggests I'm like "nope, that one's been ruined for me!" Grin

I know of one. Born relatively recently. Was told by a friend because she thought it was an odd name. That's because we're in Northern Ireland and there's been a high profile court case about Ashers Bakery.

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 26/08/2018 15:27

Nameberry is a US website. The Independent article writer doesn't seem to realise that. The name been looked up a lot, but that's not the same as being actually given to children. When's your baby due?

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 26/08/2018 15:28

Maybe postpone naming him until after this year's stats come out? Smile

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 26/08/2018 15:28

Oh god, just googled "Asher's bakery" shoofly. Now having even more of a wobble Confused

Not due til October but have been told we may well have to get him out early due to some complications.

None thankfully...

AtiaoftheJulii · 26/08/2018 15:32

"Nameberry calculated the list by looking at traffic data of the most viewed names by the sites visitors in the first half of 2017."

I wouldn't worry about it!

PrincessConsuelaBannanaHammock · 26/08/2018 15:34

I don't know any either and have a 9 month old dd so spend a lot of time at baby groups etc.
I don't think that's the most popular of actually named babies, just seems to be viewed a lot

UserThenLotsOfNumbers · 26/08/2018 15:35

Love the name. Have not heard of or met any Ashers though.
It has a great Biblical meaning too: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asher
