If you read the name Maia, how would you say it?

May-a or Mi-ya

My - a (as in the word "my", followed by schwa)

MongerTruffle · 20/08/2018 10:07

I would say it the same as Attica.

Strawberry2017 · 20/08/2018 10:10

May-a is how I would pronounce it. X

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 20/08/2018 10:12

I've met children with both pronunciations but if faced with the name on a piece of paper I would say May-a as a default. Reason being Mai on its name is pronounced May then add the extra 'a' onto the end.

blueskiesandforests · 20/08/2018 10:14

My-uh

You'll have to live with the fact that people will pronounce it differently and miss hear it as Mia or Mya or Maya and therefore write the "wrong" name, if you choose a name which is similar to lots of other popular names. You can correct people of course and they'll adapt, but people getting it "wrong" initially will be part of living with this name.

SoupDragon · 20/08/2018 10:14

I’m not sure! Probably May-a.

SoupDragon · 20/08/2018 10:15

Actually, if you mean me-a when you say mi-ya, I wouldn’t ever pronounce it like that. May-a or My-a for me.

butlerswharf · 20/08/2018 10:21

My-a

TTEA · 20/08/2018 10:24

My aunt is called 'Maya' and she hears is pronounced

  • My-A
  • May-A
  • Mi-A

However you spell it it will be pronounced incorrectly by some. I prefer the spelling Maya, but either way it's a lovely name!

IVflytrap · 20/08/2018 10:26

My-uh.

If someone told me it was pronounced different to normal, I would then think maybe "May-uh". But My-uh would be my default.

TTEA · 20/08/2018 10:28

Also. My gran used the spelling 'Maya' because she thought everyone knew who the Mayans were, Maya chocolate (Maya Gold - yum!) etc. Seems that's not the case Grin

pipilangstrumpf · 20/08/2018 10:39

May-a

Flamingosnbears · 20/08/2018 10:49

My - Aa

pouraglasshalffull · 20/08/2018 10:51

May-a

househunthappening · 20/08/2018 10:54

May-a, because I know one.

Everyone gets it wrong though and calls her My-a.

LeeMiller · 20/08/2018 11:00

Maia or Maya I'd say My-uh

Mia would be Mee-uh

SleepFreeZone · 20/08/2018 11:02

My- uh

Sophronia · 20/08/2018 11:28

My-uh

user1906 · 20/08/2018 12:48

Kingkiller · 20/08/2018 12:50

I'd have thought lots of people would pronounce Miyah as 'mee-a'. I'd definitely go for Maia.

Madeline18 · 20/08/2018 12:51

Maya

Goostacean · 20/08/2018 16:11

My-yah.

Your DH’s version would be Mee-yah (emphasis on the Mee), IMO.

Icklepup · 20/08/2018 18:53

My-a

Sunshine818 · 20/08/2018 18:55

My-a

Dani18 · 20/08/2018 21:46
