Calvin?

DH and I really struggling to think of a name for another DS. Our first DS, and DD, both have names that have never been massively common but have been around for a long time and are easy to spell. Most of the boys’ names I like are everywhere now (Hugo, Max, Zach...)

DH suggested Calvin and I like it, particularly nn Cal. What do others think?

Harris. And Hobbes. Neither are bad associations, and I like that it sounds... I don’t know, almost like a knight?

I have a calvin and i chose it because it was uncommon but not that unusual. Also because I love Calvin and Hobbes and DH wasn't up for Hobbes . I'd say go for it OP if you both love it then it's a perfect name

I like it. It has an ancient vibe from Calvinist religion and a modern touch from Calvin Klein. I also think of the bit in "Back to the Future" where Marty's name is assumed to be Calvin as it's written on his undies

I think Cal is cute and I like it as a nickname. My BIL is called Calvin but calls himself Calv, which I loathe, so that's probably ruined the name a bit for me.

I've got a 6y old Calvin and really like the name. Have had no negative comments. He was my 4th boy and I was struggling for names. I was worried it was a bit American at first but I love it now. It came from Calvin and Hobbes for me as I loved them as a teenager, but he associates it with Calvin Klein and Calvin Harris, as do his peers.

He loves it because he's convinced that he will be famous as "all Calvin's are famous" :) He also loves arriving at Airports as he is convinced that they put the welcome banners out for him in Duty Free :)

I think he will transition to Cal as he gets older and I think that's a nice name for older boys/teenagers and, judging by his older brothers, they all want to shorten names to as short as possible. I think both Calvin and Cal sound nice and I liked them because they are unusual (have met one other, in the US) but aren't too wacky. Go for it!

Calvin has religious connotations, more than most names as he was a Protestant reformer and many churches, especially in Scotland, are Calvinist:- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Calvin

It would be the same if you called your child Luther.

Both names will come up in school History, he'd probably have the mick taken out of him for a while.

There are plenty of other names out there that won't cause any sniggering.

My son was at a childminder with a Calvin who was known as Vinnie.....

I don't like it, sorry. Makes me think of Calvin Klein, then the religious connotations. Plus it reminds me too much of Kelvin and Kelvin which are names I really dislike.

I don’t like the name Callum at all and don’t see how Cal could be short for Caleb, it’s a different pronunciation.

I’m a bit surprised (and pleased!) to see such a positive response on the whole. I’d be quite surprised if the religious connotation would cause sniggers - ditto with Luther - that’s just not the sort of thing the teens I know would care about in the slightest.

I know, right? The teenagers I know wouldn't bat an eyelid on the what, one or 2 days they study Calvinism (if they do A level History, doubt it comes up before) or Luther, same as they don't snigger about Guy for Guy Falkes, John for John the Baptist, Richard, for Richard the Lionheart or Henry for Henry the Eighth etc etc etc. It's just a name and its not like Adolf or Jesus.
