These names were only used 3 times in 2016. Annoyingly, you can't see the names used once or twice for privacy reasons. Most of the names that low down are from a particular culture/country so not necessarily unusual worldwide but there's still quite a selection. Examples:

Standard but underused at present
August, Berenice, Bettina, Beverley, Belinda, Claudette, Devora, Geraldine, Guinevere, Isis, Lavender, Lesley, Lindsey, Marguerite, Mildred, Phyllis

Out There
Archer, Bee, Biba, Birdie, Clove, Diva, Flossy, Frenchie, Gifty, Gypsie, Hendrix, Huxley, Jewell, Joules, Journey, Katinka, Kerenza, Majesty, Onyx, Oracle, Palmer, Peach, Rosabel, Royal, Starlett, Tate, Tatum, Tiger, Twinkle

Double Barrelled
Amelia-Faith, Angel-Hope, Bonnie-Blu, Dolcie-Rae, Enya-Rose, Harper-Lea, Heavenly-Joy, Lily-Joy, Nancy-Lou, Piper-Marie, Rebecca-Rose, River-Leigh, Tallulah-Belle

Unusually Spelled
Abbygail, Addisyn, Christelle, Daizie, Gemima, Jessyca, Kalliopi, Rhylee, Scarlotte

Nice!

My fave of the girl names listed are:
August, Guinevere, Lavender, Archer, Lily-Joy

And boys:
Cecil, Oak, Tristan-James, Martyn

Is it sad that I'm genuinely really looking forward to the 2017 names lists for England & Wales to arrive next month? I'm not even pregnant

foxtiger · 22/08/2018 15:39

Christelle isn't "unusually spelt," it's French and stressed on the last syllable.

QueenOfCatan · 22/08/2018 16:07

I loved looking through those names when pregnant with DD! In 2015 only 3 were born with her name (which is why I started looking at the lists!), 16 the year after though iirc

AgentCooper · 22/08/2018 16:12

Holy fuck, who calls a baby Matey?!

QueenOfCatan · 22/08/2018 16:20

Freddie-George parents must all be fans of Harry Potter.

LauraJanee · 22/08/2018 16:26

I love the name Huxley I’m still looking for a name as I’m due today but he’s got no sign of budging. I’m also looking for and unusual name to go with my 2 boys Kailen and Erron and I think Huxley might be in my shortlist

PuppyMonkey · 22/08/2018 17:06

My favourite is definitely Oracle. Grin

RavenWings · 22/08/2018 18:00

Archer = comic show so maybe that impacts it.

Love Kerenza and Belinda. Belinda will probably come into fashion once all the Linda/Shirley etc names are back!

SpectacularAardvark · 22/08/2018 18:08

Do you think Twinkle and Starlett are twins?

TinselAngel · 22/08/2018 18:28

How would you pronounce "Kalliopi"?

WhyDoesItAlways · 22/08/2018 18:56

Ca-lie-oh-pee. If that makes sense. It was on our shortlist for a girl as I like Callie as a shortened version.

We had a DS who has a middle name not on the list so DH is very annoyed I wouldn't use it as a first name.

FASH84 · 23/08/2018 14:40

John-boy, matey and Hannibal 😂

IsTheRainEverComingBack · 23/08/2018 14:44

My middle name is in the first section of the girls names. It’s a family name and I love having it.

AlliKaneErikson · 24/08/2018 00:56

I know lots of Martyns (well, at least 5 or 6 who spell their name that way) and two Rhyans, so maybe those spellings aren’t that odd.

EspressoPatronum · 25/08/2018 08:16

Ds still not on here 😆 not sure what section his name would fit into... I guess 'out there' though that's not what we we're aiming for!

pouraglasshalffull · 25/08/2018 09:04

Who in this day and age are calling their children Isis. 3 too many.

I'm not overly keen on any of those names and Milded and Phyllis are awful. I think Peach is quite nice but I'd never call it DD too cutesy

pouraglasshalffull · 25/08/2018 09:05

Belinda used to be a nice name for me, until I started listening to "my dad wrote a porno" podcast. Ruined now.

(Highly recommend listening too though if you want a laugh, it is very popular in the UK has over 2 million followers)

Crunchymum · 25/08/2018 13:15

If this is from the ONS list, 2016 will actually be names from 2015.

ElspethTascioni · 25/08/2018 23:31

It’s Matey that’s tickled me! I mean who names their child after a brand of bubble bath...Grin

WaxOnFeckOff · 25/08/2018 23:43

Houseofsix Also Scottish, there have only been 20 of DS2 since 1975 :)

WaxOnFeckOff · 25/08/2018 23:45

scotland.shinyapps.io/babynames/

this is great for those who like boggling about in name stats.

manicinsomniac · 26/08/2018 22:48

Alli - are those you know adults? I would guess Martyn and Rhyan are so low in 2016 births because the name itself is currently quite unusual as well as it being a lesser known spelling.

OP posts:
AlliKaneErikson · 27/08/2018 12:05

The Rhyans are young (10 and under) but the Martyns are adults. The spelling with a ‘y’ is pretty much the default spelling here (S.Wales) which is why I don’t perceive it as an ‘odd’ spelling, I guess.

AlliKaneErikson · 27/08/2018 12:06

PS the Rhyans ate pronounced the same as Ryan, which is v. popular, as opposed to the girls’ name Rhian.
