Our son is due in late August, and we're thinking about the name "Francis". We love it, but my close friend called it "outdated" and "feminine". That didn't seem to phase my husband, but it got me thinking---any opinions?

Sorry don’t like it. Shortened to Fran, Franny......

cupcakesandglitter · 15/08/2018 01:18

I really like the name Francis, but I think it has to suit the person. (Im a bit biased because I love Made In Chelsea and there's a guy called Francis Boulle on it) but still, it's a lovely name if it suits x

Also if you and DH love it, don't even worry about anyone else!!

Quangot · 15/08/2018 01:22

I really like it. St Francis of Assisi was a man and that's the male spelling (female version is Frances). Others are Francis Drake and Francis Bacon.

Quangot · 15/08/2018 01:23

Frank and Frankie are fine as nicknames too.

Sophronia · 15/08/2018 03:36

I really like it

ReginaPhalange89 · 15/08/2018 04:54

Hate it sorry ! Some of the old man names I can get on board with but not this one

Sessy19 · 15/08/2018 06:12

It’s one of those names that rarely suits a youngster, a baby, it’s quite a grown up name.

But it is a name. It’s a good name. Go for it!

CarrieBlu · 15/08/2018 06:29

I have a nephew called Francis, it’s a lovely name and he’s never had any issues with it as far as I’m aware.

My MIL is a Frances and my DH wanted to consider Francis for DS. I'm afraid I vetoed it.

I don't like Frank and Fran is the MIL!

17caterpillars1mouse · 15/08/2018 12:17

I love it, I'm just not so keen on Frank myself which puts me off using it. I may use it as a middle name if I have a boy though

sexnotgender · 15/08/2018 12:19

Love it, it’s on our list.

Goostacean · 15/08/2018 12:20

Love it! Your friend clearly hasn’t seen House of Cards- Francis Underwood is anything BUT outdated and feminine (although the character is played by Kevin Spacey, but we’ll ignore that).

Great name, historic, strong- and you like it, which is the main thing!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 15/08/2018 12:26

Great name! I knew an achingly cool boy called Fran when I was at school. He was in a band and I had the most enormous crush on him. He was a Francis.

Picknickers · 15/08/2018 22:47

It's fab.

DramaAlpaca · 16/08/2018 00:47

It's not a name I like but it's a decent, strong name & I don't find it feminine even though there's a similar female equivalent. The main reason I'm not keen is that I really dislike all of the diminutives. Francis itself isn't bad.

Misericord · 16/08/2018 00:50

Love it.

GoatYoga · 16/08/2018 06:59

It’s my sons middle name after his great-grandfather. Frankie cute as a nickname when he’s younger.
