Matilda or?

DD1 is due in December.

We both like quite classical/biblical/historical names but there's been a real glut of girls in both our families in recent years and most of the names we like have been taken!

I thought we'd chosen Matilda but all DH can think of now is that it was his brother's stuffed hedgehog when they were growing up and isn't sure that he still wants it!

Names we like but can't use:

Rebecca
Rachael
Victoria
Hannah
Harriet
Olivia
Alice

Our current shortlist is:

Matilda (still my favourite!)
Miriam
Ruth
Dinah
Clara
Beatrice
Eleanor

Is there a name that we're missing that would "beat" Matilda?

Congratulations on your pregnancy. You have great taste in names, we loved similar names to you, but had DS so never used them. I love Matilda, Clara, Beatrice, Eleanor.
Alternatives are:

Abigail
Esther
Joanna
Lydia
Verity
Erin
Jemima
Leah
Harriet
Charlotte
Norah
Felicity
Zoe

Tabitha and Martha have the same vibe as Matilda to me. Possibly also very old names such as Edwina and Edith. Jemima or Jessica? Dinah is very nice. I like Marian a lot as well. Is that any good? Or Marianne if you want it a bit more Continental.

I would go with Matilda - the stuffed hedgehog will be forgetten when DD's character comes out!

My mother's dog is named after her uncle. We all thought it a tiny bit funny when she did it (unusual name so very definitely him), but now the dog is very definitely theuncle'sname and the uncle (now dead) is forgotten. I mean this in the nicest possible way, to illustrate the hedgehog suggestion.

Dinah is lovely.

Lovely choices- I had some of those on my list.

Other choices;

Florence
Rose
Edith
Clementine
Emmeline
Cora
April

Redsharks · 12/08/2018 20:07

Love Dinah from your list.

I think Martha has a similar sound to Matilda, and I prefer Martha if I'm honest. Also love the names:

Caroline
Josephine
Diana
Elizabeth
Mary
Scarlett
Beatrice

Feel all are classic and beautiful as you'd stated.

Valkarie · 12/08/2018 20:09

Delilah

emwithme · 12/08/2018 20:09

Most of these names have been mooted at one point or another!

I love Frances but my nephew is Frankie (and my bro would take it the Wrong Way!)

Martha was on the shortlist but all I can think of now is Handmaid's Tale!

Tabitha is gorgeous. For a cat was that Bewitched?

Edith is a definite possibility, but Edwina isn't all I can think of is Currie even though if baby was a boy he was definitely Edwin

I hadn't thought of Verity. I knew one at junior school and she was lovely...will mention it to DH and see what the reaction is.

Margot popped into my head last weekend but then auto-cucumber changed it to Maggot which put me off Hmm

(Middle name is probably going to be Elizabeth)

I was gonna lost my kids names....2 of them have already been suggested!

Frances....you can have the nn Fran so it's not the same as your nephew (though I have a franky, her choice! My sister used to call her fat franny when she was a baby!)

Esther

Josephine nn Josie (or phina as my girl gets called!)

Personally I don't like Matilda.

motortroll · 12/08/2018 22:10

Forgot to say Clara is lovely...on my list along with Helena
