Guthrie - First name or surname?

The8thMonth · 12/08/2018 07:55

Hello,

Wanted to get some thoughts on the name Guthrie, for a boy's first name. Is this too much of a surname to be used as a first name? Is it too strange, unique? Also, any thoughts on nick names? Was thinking Gus...

Thank you!

I prefer Gus as a name in it’s own right. If you want a longer name I prefer Angus, Magnus or Fergus rather than Guthrie

StarfishSandwich · 12/08/2018 08:57

Guthrie is what we call the heel prick test we do on babies on day 5... I’m not loving it as a baby name!

Gus is cute though! Superstar had good suggestions, or August/Augustus?

bridgetreilly · 12/08/2018 09:00

I don't normally love surname-as-first names, but I do quite like this. I would just shorten it to Guth, though. Why change it to Gus?

mpsw · 12/08/2018 09:02

I would see it as a surname.

Because military families would immediately associate it with Lord Guthrie (the retired chief who fell off his horse at this year's Trooping the Colour). .

ClashCityRocker · 12/08/2018 09:03

I quite like it, but I remember in my youth guff was slang for breaking wind (think it was the Ali G show....).

However that might be quite an obscure reference, so possibly irrelevant?

Love Gus though.

FlatPackFurnitureCompAnyone · 12/08/2018 09:04

I would think he’d been named after Woody Guthrie or that it was a family name. Nothing wrong with either of those things, I’m just sharing my thoughts Smile

Cariadxx · 12/08/2018 09:04

Guthrie isn't a first name. Gus is fine though

moredoll · 12/08/2018 20:13

It's fine as a first name.
There's a Labour councillor in Westminster called Guthrie McKie.

Condragulations · 12/08/2018 20:15

I also thought Guff Blush

I know a gorgeous little boy called Gus though, his name is Augustus. I love it.

Hippopotas · 12/08/2018 20:19

What about Guthrum?

Guthrie is a 5 day baby heel prick test.
Try Woodie or Arlo.

Stripyhoglets1 · 12/08/2018 20:31

It's a surname where I am (yorkshire)

FromNowOn · 12/08/2018 21:33

Guthrie is the heel prick test.

ladycarlotta · 12/08/2018 23:53

I know a toddler Guthrie. He is cute as you like and the name seems pretty cool on him. I can't think that they call him anything for short.

TheLuckDragon · 13/08/2018 00:05

My chiropractor is called Guthrie! It suits him

The8thMonth · 13/08/2018 00:26

Thank you for all your replies! I'd forgotten that the heal pick test was called Guthrie ,😂. It's nice to hear some other thoughts on what others think..

I don't like surnames as first names so it's a no from me

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 13/08/2018 12:33

How about Angus (Gus) ?
