Romany for a girl?

furandchandeliers · 10/08/2018 15:32

I quite like this for a girl and I do have Romany roots ( great grandma was Romany gypsy, but it's a bit of a secret no ones allowed to talk aboutBlush) but I just like the sound of it and it's a bit different, I've never met one before.

What other names would I like if I like Romany Smile

Romilly

MrsPMT · 10/08/2018 15:40

Have you looked at traditional Romany names? That might be a better idea.
Kezia is one which I like.

AtticaRose · 10/08/2018 15:43

Hmm agree with PP maybe to look into names from a culture rather than give a baby the name of that culture. The Roma are still extremely discriminated against and persecuted in many parts of Europe. At best, it sounds a bit off; at worst, it could cause real issues for your daughter one day.

LoveInTokyo · 10/08/2018 16:40

Esmeralda?

furandchandeliers · 10/08/2018 17:05

Esmeralda is a bit princess for me but it's one of those names I'd love if knew someone called it but wouldn't use it myself.

Isadora?

Love Isadora and Theodora

I Know of one Romany - she's not had any issues.

Bouledeneige · 10/08/2018 17:08

Mallory
Rommilly
Merisna
Aurelia
Rosalia
Marnie

TatianaLarina · 10/08/2018 17:13

I really like it. I think if you have Romany blood you can justify it.

LoveInTokyo · 10/08/2018 17:17

Isadora is nice.

What about Rosella?

thethoughtfox · 10/08/2018 17:20

Depends where you live. She may get racist comments at school and get called a gyspy/gypo in a derogatory manner. I do hope not, though.

TatianaLarina · 10/08/2018 17:22

In EE where Roma are still mistreated they’re not necessarily called Romany.

Usually Rom, Roma, Romy or Tziganski/Cyganski.

LegoLady95 · 10/08/2018 17:23

I prefer Romy or Remy.

Isadora, Angelina, Maria and Teodora are lovely.

I was a bit confused when I saw the title of this thread, tbh.

MikeUniformMike · 10/08/2018 18:52

I know a Romany. She gets called Ro, which everyone thinks is short for Rowan or Rowena (both nice). I think it's ok.

MikeUniformMike · 10/08/2018 18:53

Isn't there a Rowella in Poldark.

bridgetreilly · 10/08/2018 18:54

I would not use it as a name, even if you have some Romany heritage.

Romy
Romilly
Romola
Rowan
Rowena
Rowenna
Roanna

TheDowagerCuntess · 10/08/2018 19:51

I think you can do better than Romany. It's too much of a label. There are lots of lovely similar-sounding names, as well as actually Romany names that are much, much nicer. You risk your DD really not thanking you for your choice.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 11/08/2018 08:32

I like Romany (Romy), it's a lovely tribute to your late GG.
Other names;
Keziah (Kizzy).
Jersey
Susannah (Sannah).
Roxanna (Roxie).
Izetta (Zettie).
