Eleanor and Elodie - too similar?

I really like the name Elodie but a member of the family is called Eleanor. Do you think they’re too similar? I’ve tried to keep names to myself but wondering if I should check and get their thoughts?!

No I don't think they are at all. Other than starting with the same letters, but they sound completely different to me

Icklepup · 07/08/2018 15:30

No, it's fine.

Poppins2016 · 07/08/2018 15:33

I think it's absolutely fine.

I'd probably aim not to call siblings Eleanor/Elodie, though, simply because it feels a little too 'samey' for such a close relationship!

Elodie is a beautiful name.

I think they would be too similar for siblings or mother and daughter, especially if Eleanor is an Ellie, but aunt and niece etc would be fine.

emmab23 · 07/08/2018 15:38

Thank for your speedy replies! It’s my niece that’s called Eleanor and guess was wondering if they both shortened their names to Ella / Ellie when they’re older!

Elodie seems to be the only name my husband and I can agree on!

I think it doesn't really matter for cousins. I'd say no, too similar if they were siblings.
Fwiw I know a family with about 8 Jacks*, they go by things like Jackie, Jack B, Curly Jack ... everyone is fine.

*Changed the name but you get the idea!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 07/08/2018 17:31

Far too similar.

They could easily become Ellie and Ellie.

emmab23 · 07/08/2018 17:39

That’s what I’m worried about!

Are they similar ages and living close by? If Eleanor is a lot older and you don't seem them regularly it's less of an issue.

Does Eleanor go by Ellie? Could you think of a potential nn other than Ellie to avoid a future clash? E.g. Deedee, Liddy, Elo, Lola

daisypond · 07/08/2018 19:40

It's utterly fine. They're cousins, not siblings.

MrsRachel85 · 07/08/2018 19:49

Agree with PPs. Not okay for siblings, fine for cousins.

Desdemony · 07/08/2018 19:54

Cousins, fine. It would be too similar for siblings though.

UntilTheVeryEnd · 07/08/2018 22:55

Totally fine for cousins. Maybe too samey if sisters. Genuinely DH and his cousin have the same name...never seemed to be an issue, even tho both used their names and not NNs.
Elodie is lovely.

DramaAlpaca · 07/08/2018 22:59

Elodie is gorgeous. They are absolutely fine for cousins, but I wouldn't put them together for siblings.
