Is our name choice 'common in every sense'?

We have a few weeks left to name our 4th son. We are struggling!

We liked (in this order)
Zachary
Marcus
Sebastian

My sister said that where she lives, Zach/Zac/Zack is 'common in every sense'. Is this true? Having a stereotypically working class name myself, I never wanted the same for our DCs, and also don't want to immediately raise assumptions when new parents hear about Zack and his mum [similar to] Jade!

Is Zachary the new Kai? Which is your favourite? Or open to other suggestions.

I love it. Doesn’t have any connotations of class to me.

YeTalkShiteHen · 04/08/2018 20:55

I honestly wouldn’t heed a word of advice from anyone who uses the phrase “common in every sense”

ItsLikeRainOnYourWeddingDay · 04/08/2018 20:57

If Zachary is shortened to zach or zac here is definitely a connotation.

Marcus and Sebastian are lovely.

Ziggzagg · 04/08/2018 20:58

How rude!! My beautiful DS is Zakariah (Zak for short)!! It's a lovely name Wink

BikeRunSki · 04/08/2018 20:59

It is quite a popular name. I know 4 amongst my dc’s peers (they are 6 and 9). But I like it, and have no associations with it.

Shampooeeee · 04/08/2018 21:00

I don’t think Zac is common at all.

DramaAlpaca · 04/08/2018 21:01

I think it's fine, but I prefer Marcus.

BikeRunSki · 04/08/2018 21:02

I also went to school with 2 Zacharys, who were both extremely well spoken and “naice”. One of them pops up as an expert on C4 property shows from time to time.

AuntieStella · 04/08/2018 21:03

I think Zak is a lovely name, and do!mt think of it as common at all.

But I think Marcus is an utterly brilliant name, and so from your list wouid go for that as first choice,

NoParticularPattern · 04/08/2018 21:04

Zach was a front runner had DD been a boy. We never fully agreed on it but I would say it would have been the most likely. We wouldn’t have used the long version though but that’s just us! We really like Zach/Zak/Zack so it’s a win from us!

AdaColeman · 04/08/2018 21:06

Another vote for Marcus.

poppyseed1663 · 04/08/2018 21:09

No connotations in my opinion but I think Marcus or Sebastian happen to be nicer names.

Loopytiles · 04/08/2018 21:11

Zack/zach are popular.

Marcus and Sebastian are posher names.

SisterNotCisTerf · 04/08/2018 21:12

I don’t know a single Zach/Zak/Zack under 30 and only 1 over 30.

HeyDolly · 04/08/2018 21:14

It’s popular, though maybe not as much as it previously has been, but no derogatory connotations with the name in my area.

fruityb · 04/08/2018 21:16

As a teacher I’ve taught one Zack and he was cool. Marcus I could never call my child - I taught a few and they’ve never been good. Why I could never call my child Oscar, Summer, Jordan, Callum... 😂

Megan2989 · 04/08/2018 21:17

Zach is common here too. But still like the name

Peachypips · 04/08/2018 21:18

My son is called Zachary. Completely sick of all this name/class nonsense. In fact, sick of ALL the classist snobbery found in the UK in the so-called middle classes. Wankery. Wtf does it matter. If you like it, use it.

4GreenApples · 04/08/2018 21:19

Zachary sounds fine to me. I only know one Zac - I think his full name is Zachariah.

FrowningFlamingo · 04/08/2018 21:24

Zach is definitely the most popular boys name amongst my friends recently. I'd probably be considered upper middle class so I'm not sure there's a problem with it being 'common in every sense'

IsTheRainEverComingBack · 04/08/2018 21:25

Not popular where I am (south east Home Counties) certainly wouldn’t think it common here. It’s a lovely name, use it Smile

I think both Marcus and Sebastian are a bit classier.

But that's just my opinion. If you like Zach, then use it.

Sophronia · 04/08/2018 21:35

Zachary is a great name.

careerontrack · 04/08/2018 21:39

I really dislike it and literally every second child round here age 16 and under is Zack, Zac, Zak or Zach. It would be no exaggeration to say that o know of about 80 kids with this name including 9 in the current year 7 at DD school
