Is our name choice 'common in every sense'?

We have a few weeks left to name our 4th son. We are struggling!

We liked (in this order)
Zachary
Marcus
Sebastian

My sister said that where she lives, Zach/Zac/Zack is 'common in every sense'. Is this true? Having a stereotypically working class name myself, I never wanted the same for our DCs, and also don't want to immediately raise assumptions when new parents hear about Zack and his mum [similar to] Jade!

Is Zachary the new Kai? Which is your favourite? Or open to other suggestions.

3 Zacks of varying spellings in one of my child's class next year - very popular round here.

TwinkleMerrick · 04/08/2018 21:48

I'm a teacher and every Zack that I have taught has been lovely. Every Kai on the other hand has been a pain! Go with Zack

ourkidmolly · 04/08/2018 21:59

Marcus? Haven't heard that in yonks? Sounds like an estate agent in the1980s. Is that popular? Sebastian always seems a bit posh. Zack is nice though. I'd say classless like Jack.

I love the name Zachary / Zach! Efron, Braff, de la Rocha, Quinto, Levi... so many awesome Zach / Zacharys. Yeh there’s a few about but that’s cos it is such a great name! There was even a US president called Zachary 🙂

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 04/08/2018 22:09

I really like Zac, I only know one. Sebastian however has had a major comeback I know of several and Marcus is awful

Stuckforthefourthtime · 04/08/2018 22:18

Thank you all! We're not looking to sound especially posh, just also don't want him to be giving me the same grief I gave my mum, who was not a native English speaker and chose a celebrity name that has dated poorly (but not my sisters, including the judgy one! Sad) It sounds like maybe there are a few locations where it is super popular? We only know one around here.

Our other sons have what we'd hope to be fairly traditional and not particularly class-bound names, which is also why I am a bit off Sebastian, which seems both a bit fancy, and also a bit pointless as every man we know with a 4 syllable name is known by a nickname anyway.

Maybe Marcus is the compromise option!

Zach isnt a common name where we live. My favourite of the three is Marcus though.

brizzledrizzle · 04/08/2018 22:23

All of them are good. I'm less keen on Zachary though but that's because of Lost in Space.

TheOrigFV45 · 04/08/2018 22:24

We have two Zacs in our (not very long) street. It's quite popular round here (Essex/Suffolk border)

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 04/08/2018 22:35

💙 Zachary.

scrivette · 04/08/2018 22:36

I know one Marcus and one Zachary but not any Sebastian's.

Agustarella · 04/08/2018 22:42

I didn't know that Zachary was common in the pejorative sense. I thought Biblical names were automatically respectable. I prefer Marcus, but not because there's anything wrong with Zachary!

MikeUniformMike · 04/08/2018 23:15

I like Zac but Zachary is very popular. See below.
Sebastian I don't like at all and consider downmarket. Seb makes me think of seborrhea.
I like Marcus but Mark was very popular when I was young.

Zachary. Went to a cosy traditional pub for lunch with Dp. Oh horrors. The next table was a family. Mum, Dad and two primary school age kids.
The kids were very well behaved and were called Lucas and Zachary, both nice names.
We've been back to the pub and we had more noise from a neihbouring group of pensioners. (but we had a laugh about it afterwards)

Picknickers · 04/08/2018 23:42

Zachary is a gorgeous name as is Zack. I asked my sis a primary school teacher and she's never taught one in 8 years. Must be a regional thing.

Halfahunnerstillastunner · 04/08/2018 23:45

I like Zak/Zach and it's not seen as "common" here (in the way the Jayden/Kayden type is by snobby people like your sister!)

Marcus is quite cool. Makes me think of Gladiator - Marcus Aurelius!

Unfortunately every Sebastian I've known as a grown man has been a useless, wet, twunt with an annoying voice so it really doesn't appeal to me at all but I think that's just my unfortunate coincidental experience! Grin

fruityb · 05/08/2018 12:33

Loads of people said my son had a dogs name - on here when I asked for opinions as well. Never mind the fact you can call a dog anything you like... it’s not like he’s called Fido!

Ohyesiam · 05/08/2018 12:35

I know a few Zac’s , all middle class.

Stuckforthefourthtime · 05/08/2018 13:29

@fruityb agree - but at least people are very honest on here. In person, people (other than my family!) are so often polite in public but rude behind people's backs, I'd hate that.
In our case, at least one poster hates each choice, which seems balanced to me!

Zach Goldsmith would tell you she’s talking cobblers.

sonnyboo · 05/08/2018 13:46

I don't like Zak, Zack, Zach etc as it sounds comical imo. Like a cartoon sound and not manly

TatianaLarina · 05/08/2018 14:26

What sounds manly to you sonny?

Mummyme87 · 05/08/2018 14:28

I have a Sebastian (4) and a Zachary (6m) and wouldn’t say they are common names

Madmarchpear · 05/08/2018 14:38

Zach and Sebastian not posh round these parts. Same tranche as Connor or Josh. To be honest I think it's increasingly difficult to pick class statement names for boys. The trad Ollie, Henry, William etc names have diffused. You have to go out there with a Marcus, Perigrine, Augustus etc to say look I'm proper middle class.
