I've given my son a really common name

There's no help now, is there?!

I've been reading a lot on names and how you're judged from paper value (so CV, etc).

The name I chose for my DS is the type that wasn't common or overly used but now everyone seems to be using it.

My SIL just said she knows two new babies with the same name.

Ridiculous of me getting upset but these things really grate me Blush

Did the same thing happen to anyone else?

The most important question is do you like the name?

LupiPie · 02/08/2018 11:20

Cbeebies I do like it!

But it's not my name Sad he will have it for life, not me

It really doesn't matter. You chose a name you love, that I'm sure your son has grown into and made his own. It doesn't matter if there are another 2/3/4 Olivers, Leos or Patricks in your social circle.

Cbeebiesrehab · 02/08/2018 11:21

My daughter’s BC name is relatively common (top 30) and I have to admit it really bothers me BUT we use a unusual diminutive day to day, that she is primarily known by so I feel that’s the best of both worlds. It’s hard enough to find a name you like without having to worry about popularity too. We agreed on a name for our son (currently pregnant) and it’s top 100 but it’s the only name we agree on xx

SnuggyBuggy · 02/08/2018 11:22

Worst case scenario he can change it by deed poll

PuppyMonkey · 02/08/2018 11:22

How old is DS now? And you really have to say the name really OP as we might be able to suggest a good NN to adopt. Smile

BendydickCuminsnatch · 02/08/2018 11:22

But is is classic or ‘faddy’/of its time? Ie will it date or not? Arlo, Bodhi etc is going to date. Oscar, Henry are not IMO.

IKnowItsTIMHONKSTIMHONKS · 02/08/2018 11:22

What's the name Grin

PuppyMonkey · 02/08/2018 11:23

Sorry about all the reallys Blush

LupiPie · 02/08/2018 11:24

I like guessing on these threads, so I'll say Alfie

Bobbiepin · 02/08/2018 11:24

Yeah you can't start a thread like this without saying the name.

My mum is one of 4 with her name in her friendship group. There are also 5 Stevens. It hasn't done them any harm.

Asmallrole · 02/08/2018 11:24

Oh.

userabcname · 02/08/2018 11:24

I wouldn't worry. My son's name is a good, classic name that is up and down in popularity but spiked (think it was 22nd) last year when we named him. Just means lots of people like that name! And given how names go in and out of popularity along with the fact your son will socialise and work with people of varying ages when he's older, it really won't make that much difference.

Cbeebiesrehab · 02/08/2018 11:26

I can honestly say I have never met a baby Vincent and definitely wouldn’t describe it as one of the popular names. Maybe Vinnie is a bit more popular due to the ‘ie’ names around at the moment but even then I wouldn’t say it’s common

Childrenofthesun · 02/08/2018 11:26

Vincent is not a common name where I live.

My DC both have top 10 names. Both are the only ones in their classes at primary school. One other of each name in the whole school.

BounceAndJump · 02/08/2018 11:27

I don't know any Vincent's, unless you go for a really obscure name (which will have downsides) then there will be others about with the name, but its not like jack/Alfie/Oscar where they are everywhere. I wouldn't class Vincent as common at all.

LupiPie · 02/08/2018 11:27

Cbeebies He's definitely not a Vinnie Grin

IKnowItsTIMHONKSTIMHONKS · 02/08/2018 11:27

I don't think it's common and I actually quite like it!

PuppyMonkey · 02/08/2018 11:28

Oh I like Vincent - I can’t say I’ve heard many babies called that round here.Confused

rebelrosie12 · 02/08/2018 11:28

This must be a joke? Why are you worried about That name? It's not like Jack or Oliver (also fine names) which have been top ten loads of times.

PuppyMonkey · 02/08/2018 11:28

Call him Vincenzo instead

Cbeebiesrehab · 02/08/2018 11:29

It is currently ranked 156th...definitely nothing to worry about!! :)

BendydickCuminsnatch · 02/08/2018 11:30

Don’t know any babies called Vincent, youngest I know is my age (28). Works for any age, therefore in the ‘classic’ category for me, therefore nothing to worry about.

Chimchar · 02/08/2018 11:31

Love Vincent!
It's the name of my fantasy 4th child!

It's not a too unusual name, everyone can pronounce it, and it's pretty cool. I only know one who is in his forties.
