I've given my son a really common name

There's no help now, is there?!

I've been reading a lot on names and how you're judged from paper value (so CV, etc).

The name I chose for my DS is the type that wasn't common or overly used but now everyone seems to be using it.

My SIL just said she knows two new babies with the same name.

Ridiculous of me getting upset but these things really grate me Blush

Did the same thing happen to anyone else?

380 born last year- ridiculous to say it’s “really common”

BertrandRussell · 02/08/2018 13:30

Yep. I have a Grace who is now 22. People said “I didn’t realize you were religious”!

GrumbleBumble · 02/08/2018 13:40

When people on MN talk of CVs and people being judged by their name the use of common means "lower class" not "popular". Oliver, Harry Jack, George, Evie, Sophie etc are all very popular names top 10 names that would pass the "high court judge" test.

FreshEyre · 02/08/2018 13:41

Don't worry and ignore SIL. You chose the name because you loved it.

There's no way of knowing whether DS will come across another Vincent at school.

In DC's class there isn't a single Jack, Harry, Thomas or Oliver (which are meant to be popular/common) but he does know two Ruperts and two Franks!

Verbena87 · 02/08/2018 13:48

Not too common and a good name!

I have a really common name for my age (was one of 3 in my class at school), but it’s a lovely name with a great meaning and it suits me. I like it a lot.

Whalebird · 02/08/2018 14:21

I knew an incredibly cool Vincent at uni but I agree it's not THAT popular, and I know plenty of little Arlos, for example

Mousefunky · 02/08/2018 15:16

It bothered me when I had DC1 too as I wanted him to be the only one I knew of. I don’t know why I was so precious about it looking back and I really don’t care now. His name is nowhere near the top 20 even, I think it’s in the sixties or seventies so it’s far from common.

I am pregnant with my fourth DC and he is being given a much more common name. Still not top ten but it’s a well known name. I really don’t mind because it’s a beautiful classic name.

Treaclepie19 · 02/08/2018 17:34

I really like Vincent, it's not common!
I havent met any Vincents.

MariaMadita · 02/08/2018 17:39

Vincent isn't particularly popular in England & Wales... names.darkgreener.com/#vincent

It's a great name imo :) Vincent and Vincenzo are actually on my list as well...

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 02/08/2018 17:40

Vincent isn't that popular. I know two under 20 and quite a few over 60.

BertrandRussell · 02/08/2018 18:52

“Vincent isn't particularly popular in England & Wales.“
It’s not popular at all! Less than 400 every year in 300000 baby boys born.

PetraRabbit · 02/08/2018 18:56

I have never heard of a child or baby called Vincent and I have a one year old, went to all the baby classes etc. I do think it's a name that could become more popular amongst parents looking for something unusual but not invented or too faddy. I absolutely love it and I dislike overly popular names. If it helps, men tend to care less about having an original name than women do. They tend to like having solid standard names. You've made a perfect choice.

BevBrook · 02/08/2018 18:56

Oh, don’t worry, it’s fine. Whatever name you choose there may be a freak situation where you find yourself in a group with more than one - there were two Hamishes at a toddler group I went to and we are nowhere near Scotland. While my son with a top 20 name has nobody else with that name in his year group.

PippilottaLongstocking · 02/08/2018 18:57

I gave my son a name that was #1 in the top 10 the year he was born. But it suits him and it’s a name that’s been around for a long time so isn’t going to age badly like a lot of names do. Vincent is a good classic name (think Vincent Van Gogh for example!)

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 02/08/2018 19:04

Vincent is gorgeous.

FASH84 · 03/08/2018 19:17

I've only known of two Vincent's in my life both are now older men, one was a butcher with a shop called Vince meat 🙈

leghoul · 03/08/2018 20:16

Common = not infrequently 'classic'
= just as good on a baby as a small child as a sensible young adult and a middle aged professional etc
Can choose own 'known as' if they want to as they grow up. One of my DC has a common name and they LOVE it and are 'so glad' that is their name (actually, not that common, no others in their school despite the 'top 10/20/30 names' stats)

leghoul · 03/08/2018 20:17

Just seen it! A classic and I don't know anyone with that name
