I've given my son a really common name

There's no help now, is there?!

I've been reading a lot on names and how you're judged from paper value (so CV, etc).

The name I chose for my DS is the type that wasn't common or overly used but now everyone seems to be using it.

My SIL just said she knows two new babies with the same name.

Ridiculous of me getting upset but these things really grate me Blush

Did the same thing happen to anyone else?

Vincent’s a lovely name? Is it really common these days; I don’t know a single one under 40?
I thought it was going to be Finn...

Atetoomanyjaffacakes · 02/08/2018 11:32

I don't know any babies called Vincent!

My DS is Jake. Very common but I love his name and it really suits him so I don't care!

DN4GeekinDerby · 02/08/2018 11:32

It probably won't end up a big deal. Even if it is more common, it doesn't mean there will be loads in your area and even if so, there will be other ways around it: nicknames, going by a middle name or surname (the latter happened at one of the high schools I went to, several Michaels and Jons and quite a few were pretty much known by their surnames more than their first).

I mean, boys tend to be named from a smaller pool of name than girls , so it's a pretty common situation. At one small place I worked, there were 5 guys with the same first name (we had Daniel, 2 Dans, Danny, Manager-Danny).

Also, if you have a common surname, he'll probably be hard to google later which does have benefits Grin

LupiPie · 02/08/2018 11:33

I chose it because I thought it was classic, lovely meaning but also a bit edgy and cool whilst still being timeless

It's my SIL telling me she knows two others that made me very shocked. She quickly changed the subject and she isn't the type to welcome questions Blush

Eh?!

I know one baby vinnie and zero Vincents.

It isn't a common name!

crunchtime · 02/08/2018 11:38

i grew up with a very unusuak[for it's time] name. I never met another kid with the name-even now i think i have only met a few people with the same.
I hated it. Absolutely hated it. I hated being instantly recognisable to everyone and memorable for having the 'weird' name.
I hated never being able to get a pencil with my name on. I hated people always commenting on it. I hated people wondering if it was short for... or calling me the similar but wrong name that it sounded a bit like.

When i had my kids i wanted them to have names that other kids have. My youngest is part of a gang of friends and there are 4 of them with the same name. Doesn't bother any of them one iota and i love it because he stands ou for his personality and his talents not for having a name that noone else has.

TheHalfBloodPrincess · 02/08/2018 11:45

I love Vincent! It was on the list for my ds but I have to admit that I was put off by knowing 2 other Vincents and a Vinnie all under 3.

I chose a similar type of name (Leonard) which I knew none of but since having him I know of 2 more Angry

HJL2506 · 02/08/2018 11:46

I wouldn't worry about Vincent being popular! I know of someone who has a son called Vinnie. But not Vincent.

My boy is called Stanley and that is far more heard of, although I've not personally met another one.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 02/08/2018 11:53

DS1 has a name that was common when I was growing up but is much rarer now. He had another boy with the same name in his nursery class but other than that, zilch. And so what? Even if there were a dozen of the same name I'd still like it.

Jillyjollyjandy · 02/08/2018 11:57

She might have been trying to annoy you?

Frogscotch7 · 02/08/2018 11:59

I’ve known two Vincents my whole life. One was a French exchange student in 1998, the other was a dog. It’s not common at all and it’s a pretty cool name tbh.

BarbarianMum · 02/08/2018 12:00

If you think about it, the majority of people give their child a really common name.

CoolCarrie · 02/08/2018 12:05

It’s a brilliant name, uncommon; think of Vincent Van Gogh, best painter in the world and Vincent Price, memorable actor. Not many Vincents out there.

enbh · 02/08/2018 12:06

Vincent is lovely!! Definitely not too common. Maybe it's gaining popularity but not as popular as Jack or Harry or Alfie (which are all lovely too, imo)

Gosh you could have given him much worse so please don't give it another thought.

Cosmoa · 02/08/2018 12:35

I don't think it's too common but my little girl (who has a very rare name) is only 11 weeks old and so I'm not visiting any nurseries yet.

Speaking of CV's.. I remember when I was looking through them with my OH when he had to hold interviews and we were both more drawn to the unusual names and realised we were looking through those more. I guess we felt that an unusual name would maybe make for a more interesting person! Which isn't necessarily true.. But nevertheless, they were the ones that caught our eye first.

sexnotgender · 02/08/2018 12:37

I reckon your SiL is trying to wind you up.

KeefBurtain · 02/08/2018 12:41

@HJL2506 I have a Stanley! He’s 14 now and when I named him I had a few Hmm looks, but it seems like I was ahead of the trend.

TrickyKid · 02/08/2018 12:43

Vincent is a proper name though. It's the made up names that people will judge. I don't think it matters how popular it becomes and its not often heard at the moment. You're worrying about nothing 😊

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 02/08/2018 12:45

Vincent is lovely !
Your SIL is making a cruel dig at you, for some reason, a touch of the green eyed monster maybe ...

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 02/08/2018 12:54

Great name, especially as you're not using Vinnie. Vincent is simply lovely... You have exceptional taste, OP 🙂

DiegoMadonna · 02/08/2018 13:07

Yeah I love Vincent and hate Vinnie, hah.

It was 156th last year, given to 1 in every 1000 baby boys.

In other words, it's very uncommon.

bookworm14 · 02/08/2018 13:11

Vincent is a great name, and not that common. But even if it was, what’s the problem? I don’t understand the angst on here about giving your child a popular name, particularly if it’s a consistently popular one that won’t date. Unless your surname is Smith and you give your baby a top 5 name, you’re unlikely to encounter anyone with the exact same name anyway.

Baubletrouble43 · 02/08/2018 13:13

Hehe my dogs name is vincent. It's a great name. Haven't met any babies with that name! X

NotMeNoNo · 02/08/2018 13:21

The problem is you don't realise how unusual, interesting baby names creep into your consciousness such that everyone suddenly chooses the same unusual, edgy name at once. Until you have your first baby and start hanging around with other parents you could be blissfully unaware an unusual name like Noah was in the top 10.

WonderfulWonders · 02/08/2018 13:26

I don't know any Vincent's, but I share your pain. Twenty years ago I had a Lily. People visibly blanched and asked me if it was a "family name" Grin
