Should we pick a different name?!

I’m 35wks and don’t know if I’m being hormonal so could do with some advice!

As we were telling people the gender of our baby, we wanted the name to be a surprise. Unfortunately, DH dropped a hint to his family about the name we liked. He did this early on so I asked him not to bring it up with them again.

Since then his DM and SIL have made guesses and got it right once but we neither confirmed or denied. It’s annoyed me that they keep guessing when we’ve said we wanted it to be a surprise but I know they’re excited.

Today a friend of his parents approached DH and mentioned the name we’ve picked and said that’s what his DM thinks it is! It’s made me so upset/angry that they’re not only guessing amongst themselves but now telling other people!

So, now I don’t know whether to keep the same name or change it. They are the type of people who will shout “I knew it! We guessed that ages ago” when we announce the name which might make me blow my top after giving birth! Logically, I know nothing is ‘ruined’, but it’s just made me really sad.

So your husband told them the name and now you're annoyed that they know?
You haven't even said whether or not you'll definitely use it. Pick something once you see your gorgeous boy. Best of luckFlowers

If I’m honest I think it’s your hormones but having said that I totally get you! If my mother guessed right she would be so smug about it afterwards it would make me rage😂😂 stick with the name but try and throw them off the scent a bit😉 don’t change it just because you’re annoyed now, you may regret it once your ‘back to normal!’ Lol.

Icklepup · 01/08/2018 19:32

Stick with the name.

keepingbees · 01/08/2018 19:35

Go with the name you want. Their smugness will quickly pass but the name is forever

SleepWarrior · 01/08/2018 19:50

Go with the name you want and have a stock phrase ready for any smug comments when you announce the name such (such as "Hmm, that's an odd reaction to a name announcement, most people say congratulations or what a lovely name... each to their own I suppose").

Flamingo84 · 01/08/2018 19:59

Thanks all! I hope this feeling will pass in a day or two and I’ll be back to normal. I agree about getting the rage due to smugness! 😂

@Anotherday DH just gave them the first initial (god knows why!) but they eventually guessed it.

I’d kill for a glass of wine tonight! I’ll have to make do with a Mars bar instead!

It depends if changing it means that you'll always regret not going with the original name. Do you think you'll find an alternative you love as much, given that it sounds like you settled on this name a while ago?

spugzbunny · 01/08/2018 20:32

Keep it. You won't care when the baby is born. The name is for life ... it's not about the surprise.

I told a few of my best friends and family our baby name and regretted it. Some people reacted weird to it and some people told others free we'd decided to keep it secret. Once she was born that all went out the window!

Flamingo84 · 01/08/2018 21:20

You’re right, in a year I probably won’t even remember all of this! Now I’ve calmed down I can think a bit more clearly.

If you change it, you'll always be irritated with your DH/in-laws that it's not the name you wanted to give him. It's more important to have the name you want than to 'win' the secrecy battle.

Cosmoa · 01/08/2018 22:31

Yeah I totally understand why you're annoyed but it'd be a shame not to use the name you want because of it!

MikeUniformMike · 02/08/2018 14:24

Why don't you suggest to your ILs that you are thinking of (picks two names at random) George or Reuben. Then name the baby when you see him.

Quangot · 02/08/2018 15:38

Keep the same name privately. Then tell all the nosy types you are considering Ozymandias and Jupiter-Skeleton and won't finally decide until later.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 02/08/2018 16:37

What's the big fuss? They'll find out when the baby's born anyway what the name is.

Why do you not want to tell anyone? Too late anyway now DHs has mentioned it!

Before we found out the sex my OH mentioned our girls name to his family and they didn't like it. (I forgot to ask him to keep it quiet). They didn't hold back either ! Then we found out she was going to be a girl they were asking us about names, I had told him just to say we had a few but wanted it to be a surprise so wouldn't be telling anyone . And they actually said "I hope it's not xxx" I had to stop myself from bursting into tears ! I was so angry. But we didn't say anything .

I had my heart set on it for years , so I used it ! Don't let anyone else put you off. You'll regret it
