My friend is expecting a girl and is desperate to use Ella but doesn’t want a shortened name and her sister in law is called Eleanor (and doesn’t want to use that). So... what other name do you shorten Ella to as a nn? Thanks in advance!!

Isn't Ella a name in its own right?

butlerswharf · 31/07/2018 14:33

Gabriella

butlerswharf · 31/07/2018 14:33

Marcella, Mariella

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 31/07/2018 14:34

Gabriella
Stella Grin
Penelope - bit of a stretch I know.

I am baffled why she doesn't just use Ella Confused

Aprilshowersinjuly · 31/07/2018 14:34

As long as her ds isn't Sam (ex neighbour I mean you!).

WellErrr · 31/07/2018 14:34

Ella is a name in its own right....?

LoveInTokyo · 31/07/2018 14:35

It's an odd name to be "desperate" to use. So bland.

I'd go with Gabriella.

Sassy306 · 31/07/2018 14:38

When i was pregnanr I liked Rosella or Ellarose or Ella-Rose (not keen on the hyphen as much tho) called her something completley different in the end tho lol

glitterbiscuits · 31/07/2018 14:38

Ella is perfect on its own and the Ella I know is super cool.

Sassy306 · 31/07/2018 14:39

Also Eloise is an option and not too popular :)

Cherubfish · 31/07/2018 14:39

Helena?

IHaveBrilloHair · 31/07/2018 14:41

Elizabeth.
I find Ella a bit blah so I'd go for a longer name on the birth certificate.

theveryhighlife · 31/07/2018 14:42

Ella is lovely in its own right.
However, that's not what you asked!
How about Arabella?

MikeUniformMike · 31/07/2018 14:54

All the Ellas I know are just Ella, apart from one grandmother who is Arabella.
If they are going to call her Ella, why call her something else especially if it's not obvious how it gets shortened to Ella.

MikeUniformMike · 31/07/2018 15:02

Ellarose is even worse than Ella-Rose. It looks and sounds like an affliction.

LeeMiller · 31/07/2018 16:05

Ella is a short name but not a shortened one, it's lovely as a stand-alone name.

Rafaella, Gabriella, Isabella, Mariella, Estella, Eleonora, Eloise, Elodie etc all have the potential to be shortened to something totally different once she starts school.

RavenWings · 31/07/2018 16:12

Ella is very blah and overdone, I think it's good to choose a bc name with something more to it and then have Ella as a nn.

Eliana
Elspeth
Noelle
Luella
Christabel
Annabel
Isabel
Mirabel
Rosabel
Elodie
Daniella
Eleri

Some of these though are a bit of a stretch to get to Ella (and you've no guarantee the kid will like having Ella as a nickname).

Notmyrealname85 · 31/07/2018 17:07

To be really honest I completely agree, I think Ella is so meh plus Eleanor would at least be a family name! Thanks all for your suggestions Flowers

Ella is a name in its own right.

I only know one person who uses it as a shortened name....and she's an Eleanor, so that doesn't help you!

Ella is my grandmother's name, and we did think about using it, but by the time we had the DDs it had become far too common/widespread.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 01/08/2018 03:00

"She's desparate to use Ella"

Whats stopping her. Confused.
Although God knows why. It's the most boring bland name in the world, and That's coming from someone called Clare Grin

Kokeshi123 · 01/08/2018 06:55

Gisela
Marisela

Ella is fine by itself as others have said, but really boring IMO.
