Hello,

My other half loves the name Maxwell, I'm just wanting a bit more encouragement if anyone likes the name. I like Max but i'm struggling with Maxwell. I'm not sure what it is about the name, possibly feel its a bit posh but not sure why i get that feeling.

Thankyou

I like Max and prefer Maxim or Maximillian as a longer form.
Maxwell is ok though.
The welsh form of Max is Macsen (pron. MAX-en).

Maxwell I would say is the opposite of posh. It's a surname type of name so more of a working class or American kind of feel to it. I also much prefer Maximillian, Maxim or even Maximus as they feel more traditional. But if yourworry is poshness, they won't be your taste.

DaniCam89 · 31/07/2018 12:30

I like Maxwell better than maximillian etc. It's a bit more unique and would suit a professional man. Realistically he will probably be known as Max anyway so it might be a good option for both of you x

LoveInTokyo · 31/07/2018 13:31

I think it's fine.

Everyone will call him Max anyway.

LeeMiller · 31/07/2018 15:59

Maxim or Maximillian are nicer, or just Max. Maxwell I just think Maxwell House, the instant coffee.

Rebecca36 · 31/07/2018 16:21

Lovely names. Nice to have a name that can be shortened too, it's friendly.

Maxwell or Maximillian is great with Max for short.

I know someone who called their baby boy Franklin, Frank for short (Frankie at the moment as he's little). It suits him!

Aprilshowersinjuly · 31/07/2018 16:22

Maximus.
Great name.

LorelaiVictoriaGilmore · 31/07/2018 16:57

I prefer Lomax... but I guess if you're trying to avoid posh... Grin

DannyDogg · 31/07/2018 17:02

Maxwell is a bit surnamey Maximilian is better

DramaAlpaca · 31/07/2018 17:24

I don't see Maxwell as posh, it's just a surname used as a first name.

TatianaLarina · 31/07/2018 17:45

Posh? Maxwell is 100% Essex.

I like Max, Maxillian and the French Maximin.

Mousefunky · 31/07/2018 18:05

Everyone would use Max anyway.

MuggledOff · 31/07/2018 18:12

I really like it. Much prefer it to Maxim etc.

You are brave asking about a surnamey name on MN - they are generally hated on here. My son has one and I tend to like them.

daisypond · 31/07/2018 18:20

I think Maxwell House too. I don't mind it, but it's definitely not a posh name. Maxim or Maximillian are much posher.
