Isla and Violet - too matchy?

We have a DD called Isla and I'm pregnant with the second - don't know the sex but Violet is on the shortlist for a girl. But do you think the rhyming syllables at the start of both names make them sound too matchy? Or do they sound fine together?

As someone who faced an almost identical dilemma, I would urge caution.
Congratulations!

No, both are lovely names 😀

DramaAlpaca · 30/07/2018 00:30

I've just been saying them both out loud & I don't think they are matchy at all. The 'i' sound at the beginning of Isla is longer than that of Violet. So in short I think they go fine together.

bridgetreilly · 30/07/2018 11:51

I really don't think they are matchy at all. Like even if I try to make them sound the same I can't. You are way over thinking it!

MarthasGinYard · 30/07/2018 11:53

I think it sounds a bit samey

I and Vi

RiaOverTheRainbow · 30/07/2018 12:00

I'm imagining shouting them across a park, and "Iiiiii-luh" and 'Viiiii-luht" are very similar.

Lmmontgomery · 30/07/2018 12:41

Way too similar. In terms of sounds, Violet has exactly the same sounds as Isla, just with a V on the front a a T at the end.

It's basically V-Isla-t

LatteAndLettuce · 30/07/2018 13:08

I think they sound lovely together!

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 30/07/2018 13:13

You'll end up shouting " Islet and Viola " your dinners ready Grin

AtticaRose · 30/07/2018 13:36

Hmm, yes I see what you mean. I think on balance I wouldn't.

Even in my family, where we have Catherine and Patrick, we have this problem a bit. You'd think they're totals different, but the vowel sounds are the same, and it's surprisingly impossible to tell the difference when it's shouted across the house/through walls etc. It's super weird!

So it's a no from me.

You could potentially do Violetta?

booniloo · 30/07/2018 15:46

I can't see how they even come close to matching to be honest?? I'm saying them out and in my accent they are both completely different.

DustandRubble · 30/07/2018 15:50

Violet has 3 syllables, because I pronounce the O, when I say it so not like Isla at all. But if you say “vi-let” I could see the issue.

MrsMrsMrsMrs · 30/07/2018 15:55

Both such sweet names that I wouldn’t care. I know someone who called their boys Evan, Owen and Ieuan and another family who had Ieuan and Ewan... I think yours is nicer!

SeriousSeal · 30/07/2018 19:03

Thanks everyone for your replies. Opinion is pretty much divided, so not exactly helping me with the decision. Grin I'm going to spend from now until the birth muttering 'Isla and Violet' over and over under my breath! And then DC2 will probably end up being a boy anyway...

AtticaRose I actually think Violetta has the same problem but even more so! I suppose it's the I sound at the start and the -a sound at the end.

What about Anna?

Ummmmgogo · 30/07/2018 20:32

I think Violet goes well with Isla. the only name you really have to avoid is Ida (imo).

motortroll · 30/07/2018 20:44

I knew someone who had Isla and Ella. Way worse that violet. I think they go together sound wise just fine but I don't actually think they go together style wise. This would bother me personally eg all my girls have old lady grown up names so a flower make for example I wouldn't put with it!

zozozoo · 30/07/2018 20:49

I think that if you speak well it's fine. In some accents and spoken lazily violet will sound just like Isla with a v at the start.

mathanxiety · 30/07/2018 20:52

Yes, too matchy.

Scottishgirl85 · 31/07/2018 16:51

These don't sound similar at all! But if it's bugging you - would you consider Iona, which is another Scottish island (as Isla is) and actually means violet or purple jewel.

Namedilema123 · 31/07/2018 16:59

Too matchy im afraid
