Hi,

I am due a little girl soon and so stuck for names. We have a little girl already called Soraya (Raya or Rae for short) love names that are longer but can be shortened and that are really unusual. Love the name Fifi but it’s too short and DH hates Phonenix and Sophia / Fiona are too popular for my liking. Please help as completely stuck. Thanks in advance x

I'd assume the French way that Fifi is short for Josephine.

How about : Farrah, Yasmin, Layla, Aïda, Ayesha, Shazia, Zara

@Mommatiger I sent you a PM!

Merryn nn Merry

MariaMadita · 29/07/2018 12:28

Fifi could be a nn for most names with an f or an f sound. Fenella, Florinda, Sapphira, Philippa, Euphemia, Flavia, Federica, Fabian, Joesphine etc...

You might also like Effie. :)

Saveria nn Very
Lettice in Lettie
Severina nn Sevvie
Zipporah nn Zippie
Ariella nn Ari
Mafalda nn Falda
Solana nn Sol

*Fabia
Not Fabian. Or Fabienne, I guess.

Cosmoa · 29/07/2018 13:10

Oh I really wanted to call my daughter Soraya Cassiopeia but my OH wasn't having any of it! I loved the idea of two constellation names.

I think you should call her Cassiopeia! 😍❤

I have always rather liked Bathsheba. And I think Bathsheba Everdene of Far From the Madding Crowd is a rather remarkable woman. On the same lines, Hepzibah ('my delight is in her').

Mimosa - (Mimi).

MariaMadita · 29/07/2018 15:39

@Cosmoa

I agree, constellations (or a more generalised celestial theme) would be lovely.

And there are just so many unusual but not "extemely" weird (=wait, that's a name??) options...

Bluestockings20 · 29/07/2018 16:23

My aunts name is Euphoria her shortened name faymi pronounced fay meet its an old Scottish name!!!

Cosmoa · 29/07/2018 16:27

@MariaMadita very true!

It's was nice for us finding the name Soraya. We found out when I was pregnant that my partner is part Persian. And then found out Soraya is the Persian word for the Taurus constellation.. And then realised our little girl would be (and was) born a Taurus! Worked out well 😊

Euphamia = Fayme

Valentina?

In my book there are 2 types of unusual. Dated and fancy/ trendy.
Id say Fiona was dated rather than popular. However what rule is there that says you can't use a dated name. At least you know she'll be the only one in the class.
Other ideas.
Trinity
Bryony.
Marisel
Mariel
Miranda.

Other dated names that would be unusual now.
Melissa
Dawn
Caroline
Melanie
Stephanie
Suzannah
Joanne

Ooh, two of my cousins' names have been mentioned on this thread (Amandine and Elora). That hardly ever happens!

MadameJosephine · 01/08/2018 15:30

I’ve just heard of sisters today named Lorelei and Marceline which I thought were beautiful names. I don’t think I’ve ever come across a Marceline before

MikeUniformMike · 01/08/2018 18:30

The breton nmae Nolwenn isn't the same as Olwen.
Nolwenn is linked to the place name Noyal.
Olwen means white footprint.

speak2me · 01/08/2018 18:35

I heard sisters called Marnie and Bay (sp?) which I thought was unusual

KellyMarieTunstall2 · 01/08/2018 18:38

I have an Ophelia who is Fifi or just Fi. Fionulla is nice.

ShadyLady53 · 04/08/2018 23:46

@madamejosephine I know a Marceline named after Walt Disney’s hometown!

neddle · 04/08/2018 23:54

If you like Cornish names, how about Zenara?
