Hi all,
We don’t yet know the sex of our baby but have begun discussing baby names.
We like the name Poppy for sentimental reasons as we found out about her/him when the baby was the size of a Poppy seed and the nickname has just stuck. My gut feeling is that it’s a girl so...
What do you think of the name Poppy? And
Can you think of a middle name? (Surname begins with a W so no “E” names... don’t want a PEW baby haha!

Thanks!

Poppy is a beautiful name. I love Poppy Florence or Poppy Arabella

Icklepup · 28/07/2018 14:06

Poppy Vera
Poppy Alice
Poppy Juliet

Honestly? I think it's very cutesy & twee. It's one of those names that's sweet on a toddler but as an adult I would hate to be called Poppy. Sorry to be blunt but you did ask for opinions.

I think your reason for choosing it is really lovely though.

PonyPals · 28/07/2018 14:08

Cute name for a baby or a kitten but not for a grown woman Envy

DannyDogg · 28/07/2018 14:10

Rhymes with ploppy

notstamping · 28/07/2018 14:12

I was going to call my DC Poppy but he was boy. (Three weeks old now!) Poppy is a beautiful name and like you I liked it for sentimental reasons.

notstamping · 28/07/2018 14:13

Also middle names I liked:

Poppy Alice
Poppy Emma

Awful. Just so boring.

I knew a Poppy who people called Poopy.

BigPinkBall · 28/07/2018 14:17

Like others I don’t see it as an adult name, but if you do use it I’d choose a more grown up middle name so she’s got the choice when she’s older.

User14789013 · 28/07/2018 14:18

Poppy is the most twee of all the twee girls names (daisy, molly, drippy, dolly) that should be reserved for cows.

Clairetree1 · 28/07/2018 14:20

nice name, but as a nick name, not a real name.

short for Penelope maybe?

Shehz21 · 28/07/2018 14:21

Really does not suit an adult. Good on a toddler but that's about it. Maybe as pp mentioned, ude it as a middle name and if it turns out to be a girl, she can choose which one she wants to use later in life.

daisypond · 28/07/2018 14:37

I like Poppy. It doesn't seem twee to me. I think it's because Poppy isn't a diminutive, it's just the name of the flower.

Pinkgeorge · 28/07/2018 14:44

I know 3 dogs called Poppy

californiascreaming · 28/07/2018 14:48

I like it.
This thing about it being a child's name I don't get - in real life have come across all sorts of names - I don't react by thinking - oh thats a dog/cow/toddlers name. Just usually carry on with whatever conversation I was having...

Twickerhun · 28/07/2018 14:49

I love the name, but couldn’t use it as I can’t see it working fir an adult.

sue51 · 28/07/2018 14:52

Too twee. Okay as a family nickname but as an adult; just no.

NutElla5x · 28/07/2018 14:56

My sister has a dog called Poppy,I don't even like taking it for walks because I'm too embarrassed to call her lol-it's such a weak and prissy name. But if you are sure you want to call your child that I would give it a middle name with a bit more depth to it.Annabelle maybe. Is PAW ok?

Yorkymidge · 28/07/2018 14:59

Wow didn’t think so many people would be against it!
If i WAS to use it as a middle name, what first names would suit it? Thanks

I have a Poppy so I obviously like the name! It does seem to be divisive though... My DD does have a classic second name although we didn't pick it to be an alternative if she decided she didn't like Poppy. I first thought of it after reading Mary Wesley.

There's a few of them around at the moment, so it's not exactly unusual.

The thing with people who hate it, you might not like the names they would choose, you might just have very different taste so their advice might not be right for you?

Mummyh2016 · 28/07/2018 15:13

I have a Poppy and our reason for naming her that is the same as you!
We have an E name for a middle name though so not able to help you with that.

bananasandwicheseveryday · 28/07/2018 15:18

I love it and think it's very pretty. Like others, I don't understand the comments about the name not being suitable for an adult. Mind you, we were told the same about dc1's name. Tough. We loved it, still do. And it's never held dc1 back in their professional life, now that they are an adult. As it happens, we were discussing names with the dcs a few weeks ago and it turns out that they both love their names and have decided that they will be including them in the names of their own dcs.
So, OP, go with what YOU like and ignore a bunch of internet naysayers.

daisypond · 28/07/2018 15:18

I don't see why Poppy is any different than Lily, to be honest. It's a bright, colourful, tall flower. I much prefer it to Daisy, which is a small ground-dwelling plant. I know two Poppys in their late-20s, who seem to be going through life unscathed by their name.

Greenteandchives · 28/07/2018 15:25

Poppy Jean is lovely.

NutElla5x · 28/07/2018 15:26

If it's a boy you could call him Popeye op Grin
