Lovely women coming on all excited and I read their post.... It is so not on to keep pissing on people's parades but, sometimes I type out my reply and then delete because being brutal is mean. Does anyone else not pass comment because the comment will be unwanted??

Someone suggested a baby name on an thread and I wanted to ask if they were being serious but I was nice and didn’t

Cosmoa · 27/07/2018 06:01

All the time 😂 but even on mumsnet I try to stick to "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all"

Sessy19 · 27/07/2018 06:04

Are you KIDDING??? Have you seen some of the nasty, rude, unnecessary and cruel comments on this site??

In my opinion, not enough choose to pass on making a comment. Commenting on opinion is allvery well as that is often what is solicited, but I’ve been called all sorts of awful names for suggesting I LIKE A BABY NAME!!!! MumsNet is not known for attracting polite consumers....beware.

Sometimes I want to write ‘What the actual fuck?’ on a name thread but then I remember that I wouldn’t say that to someone’s face in the same circumstances so I refrain 😬

LoveInTokyo · 27/07/2018 06:15

It depends.

If it’s someone’s first baby then there is perhaps some merit in letting them know how a name might be perceived and potentially saving their child from a lifetime of judgement and ridicule. If it’s their third and DC1 and DC2 already have awful names then there is often not much that can be said without being rude about their existing children’s names.

You can be very plain about a name (isn't it the whole purpose of the topic, to get the opinions manners wouid prevent you from saying in RL) without being gratuitously horrible. Though of course one person's plain is another's brutal.

And even on MN there are still inhibitions about accepting that women can speak their minds and don't have to be super-nice. Expressing a negative opinion should not be high-risk territory.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 27/07/2018 08:32

I try not to be blatantly rude but sometimes a name is that ridiculous it's hard not to be. But on the whole if I don't like it I'll just say so.

kenandbarbie · 27/07/2018 19:04

Well they're asking for opinions so there is no point not letting them know what you think.

holasoydora · 27/07/2018 20:07

I think there is a different between letting someone know what you think and being rude.

I try to always be kind. I once read an unkind comment about my baby's name on this board. It really didn't help my post-natal depression and all-consuming sadness that I hadn't been able to use the name I really wanted.

Picknickers · 27/07/2018 22:25

I think some people are on here with the sole purpose of being snarky. The comment that I find ridiculous is "it's too try hard". Ok then I'll put no effort into naming my baby at all Grin
