Which name do you like better from the two?
Lyra or Carina
We have Greek and Spanish roots so both names are linked to our cultures. Just any decide. We had a totally different lost initially but seem to settle on these two...
Do you like both equally or do you have a favourite and why?

I prefer Lyra - I think it's prettier. It's also the name of the girl from Philip Pullman's Northern Light/His Dark Materials trilogy, which is a pretty cool literary heroine for a child!

krustykittens · 03/07/2018 13:11

I love them both! Sorry, not at all helpful.

Orangedaisy · 03/07/2018 13:12

Lyra. Carina sounds like a car to me.

HappyLollipop · 03/07/2018 13:13

I prefer Lyra but they are both very pretty names.

letsallhaveanap · 03/07/2018 13:14

Lyra is gorgeous. I do like Carina too but Lyra is especially lovely

Momadream · 03/07/2018 14:23

Interesting how most people prefer Lyra. What is the reason for that? Is it because it is more unusual or shorter?
What image will each name give you? What girl will it make you feel a person with that name is?
Personally I think that Carina is such a sweet girlie name and Lyra is an exotic trendy one...

I like Carina, and it gives you Carrie as a nn. I know a girl called Lyra, who gets called Lycra, so that puts me off it personally.

NoSquirrels · 03/07/2018 14:31

I actually like both, but the Phillip Pullman heroine is one if my favourite literary characters and I’d be proud to have a daughter like her... and not so much want a ‘sweet girlie’ name, so that’s why my personal preference!

Lilajuvel · 03/07/2018 14:32

Lyra is much nicer.

Lilajuvel · 03/07/2018 14:34

I do actually like Carina, it's just that I like the sound, not how it looks.

QueenCity · 03/07/2018 14:35

My friend just had a Lyra. I think it's a pretty name but too close to Liar for my liking.

Momadream · 03/07/2018 14:40

In Greek it is pronounced LEE-ra. So it may be an option to pronounce it the same instead of LIE-ra though I like both pronunciations. Is LEE-ra also a nice version of this name?

MariaMadita · 03/07/2018 14:41

Carina!

MikeUniformMike · 03/07/2018 14:53

I don't like Lyra. Seems like a trendy name that will date.If it's a genuine Greek name then fair enough, but the Lee-ra pronunciation makes me think of the Italian lira.

TatianaLarina · 03/07/2018 15:24

I like both, I think I prefer the UK pronunciation of Lyra. But I strongly associate it with Phillip Pullman.

Carrie is a pretty dim of Carina. Also like Calina.

hellololly · 03/07/2018 15:28

I know a 50 year old Carina so I don't like it. Lyra is classic and pretty as well as unusual. Do you spend much time in Greece/Cyprus/with Greek relatives? If you do they will just call her Lee-ra anyway.

MinaPaws · 03/07/2018 15:52

I love Lyra. It's so pretty.

Momadream · 03/07/2018 18:51

hellololly we don’t spend a lot of time in Greece, just holiday times. So I guess the LIE-ra pronunciation will be the one most people will use...
Aside from Carina, another option will be Catalina but that is a longer name and think Carina is nicer in that sense...

Lyra is nice.

SemperIdem · 03/07/2018 20:09

I like Carina, really don’t like Lyra.

redmini4 · 03/07/2018 20:14

Lyra by a mile, don't like Carina at all.

Phyllispontypandy · 03/07/2018 23:34

Really like Lyra. Another Pullman fan here.

newtlover · 03/07/2018 23:36

Lyra for me too- a great role model!

NordicNobody · 04/07/2018 00:48

Lyra is our no.1 choice for our daughter when she's born. I love the Philip Pullman books, and we have Greek family connections - plus Lyra is a constellation and dp is an astrophysicist, so to me it's the perfect name.

But I do also love Carina. I've only known one but she was awesome.
