Are people going to think we're massive Friends fans?

We have two dc already - Rachel and Joseph - and are expecting a third.

We didn't deliberately go for a biblical theme with the first two, and as we're not religious, we'd rather choose a completely non-biblical name for the third so that it doesn't look like a pattern.

Dc3 is a girl, and we'd narrowed our choice down to Jessica, Lorna and Phoebe. Then today a friend pointed out that if we went for Phoebe, we'd have named our children after 3 of the cast of Friends.

Would that be your first thought faced with three children called Rachel, Joseph and Phoebe? Does it matter? Are we going to have to rule out Phoebe?

I would immediately think of Friends.

And yes, Phoebe is Biblical.

I would make the connection but I don't see a problem with it.

Phoebe is a lovely name and it was on our shortlist.

Also just to add, we named our son after my favourite tv character at the time. Nobody has ever made the connection despite his name being fairly uncommon these days.

There is a Phobe in the bible as well (St Paul's letter to the Romans I think)

MarthaArthur · 03/07/2018 10:31

Rachel is a biblical name. But yes phoebe would be a friends theme.

MarthaArthur · 03/07/2018 10:33

Sorry i meant phoebe is also biblical. Doh!

swimmerlab · 03/07/2018 10:34

Yes I would make the friends link, but I loved friends so it wouldn't be a bad thing!

I would be disappointed if you had more dc's and didn't carry on the theme though!

Quite apart from the Friends thing, Phoebe is in the top 20 most popular girls names at the moment, so it is going to become an incredibly common name in your DCs generation.

deptfordgirl · 03/07/2018 12:30

It would be the first thing I noticed but I was a massive Friends fan back in the day.

Greenday49 · 03/07/2018 12:34

I'd think of friends but wouldn't assume you had.

Anythingforacatslife · 03/07/2018 12:35

I would make the link and interest in the programme itself doesn’t seem to be waning. It’s still very popular amongst teenagers, in a ‘cult’ sort of way. I think things are lasting longer now because of streaming services and links to tv shows are not necessarily dying a natural death in the way they used to.

TatianaLarina · 03/07/2018 13:36

Phoebe is lovely and fits with the Biblical theme. Lorna and Jessica are very dull. Friends wouldn’t occur to me it’s very old now.

MariaMadita · 03/07/2018 14:58

I don’t think it matters. It’s unlikely that Friends will be a major cultural reference for your DC’s generation

I agree. I didn't make the connection and I am from that era, btw...

I personally don't like Lorna btw... Phoebe is lovely :)

Sessy19 · 03/07/2018 20:35

I know quite a few Phoebes.

Rachel is a lovely name! Timeless classic. Jessica and Lorna would be my suggestions because, although it’s ‘cute’, phoebe’s starting to sound a bit uninspired...sorry :(
