Top girls names putting me off all list

user25017 · 02/07/2018 20:01

I’m due in 2 weeks and have wanted a name for Dd not completely out there but just something that isn’t overly popular. Myself and dp have had a hard time agreeing on names but between us have a short list and agree to see when baby comes what we think. After reading the most popular names the majority we like is on there and I just didn’t want her having the same name as a lot of her friends etc. Names that are on dp and my list are - Ella, Harper, Maya, Indie, Elle, Amelia.

Has anyone any suggestions or think maybe these aren’t as popular? I live in Scotland and tbh don’t know any Harpers or Elle, 1 Indie, 1 Maya and I’m a teacher so maybe it isn’t as popular around here.

I know loads of Ella's, Amelia's and Indies however I'm not in Scotland x

Cbeebiesrehab · 02/07/2018 20:10

Amelia, Ellie/Ella, Maya and Harper all extremely popular where I live! I wouldn’t say Indie is popular but it’s not unheard of so I would say that one fits your criteria best!

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 02/07/2018 20:56

I like Harper, from your list, other names;
Stella
Isla
Emilia

StatisticallyChallenged · 02/07/2018 22:18

The name rankings are a bit different in Scotland which might make a difference, often names which are described as really popular on here are much less common in Scotland IME (involved in childcare so know a lot of kids names!)

Ella - officially ranking 8, but you also have a fair volume of Isabellas who are known as Ella. Know quite a few
Harper - ranking 18
Maya - ranking 47
Indie - ranking 186
Elle - ranking 257 so much rarer than Ella. Don't think I've had an Elle but there is a bit of an Ella/Ellie/Elsa clustering thing going on which might or might not bother you!
Amelia - ranking 5

P.s. you can download the full first name rankings for Scotland from here www.nrscotland.gov.uk/statistics-and-data/statistics/statistics-by-theme/vital-events/names/babies-first-names/babies-first-names-2017/list-of-detailed-tables

Thank you very much! I’ll have a look at that list! Very helpful! Such a difficult decision! To think this little one is growing away and I have no idea what we might like to name her!

Amelia is massively popular in the South East as is Ellie. Teacher here too but never met any Elle or Maya.
Wouldn't choose Ella as know a few Isabella that shorten to Ella.
I'd stick to Maya.
Or Mya.

DeckSofa · 02/07/2018 23:22

Emma
Iona
Lyra
Marissa
Sophia
Stella
Phoebe
Violet
Louisa

user25017 · 02/07/2018 23:40

Thank you for the suggestions. Think it may be time to think outside the box and revisit names! I’d spell Maya Mya too but DP spells it Maya! It seems to be the longest standing name we like and I don’t know if I’m now Over thinking it but it hasn’t quite clicked as the one but maybe when she is here it’ll just come to us. Thank you

Why not just pick the name you like, who cares where it’s rated

1One2One1 · 02/07/2018 23:56

If you like Harper would you consider Piper?

user25017 · 03/07/2018 00:49

I’m trying to pick a name I like? We can’t agree on any names 100% and as I said I just didn’t notice the ones we had considered were so popular and don’t really want one that Dd will grow up with a lot of and possibly have friends of same name that’s all. If one was our favourite and the one for us I’d choose it in a heartbeat regardless of where it is rated. Merely looking for other suggestions as the ones we have thought about hasn’t clicked yet and other people have different opinions so could mention something we’ve never thought of. Lots of people don’t want a common name for their dc and just want other people’s take or view.

Not considered Piper. I’m not sure I’m too keen but thank you

How about tweaking Maya to Amaya? Or changing to Moya.

Alternatives:
Mila
Willow, or Willa
Leah
Leila
Ellery
Lara
Holly, or Hollis
Flora
Cleo
Orla
Celia
Maeve

catinboots9 · 03/07/2018 02:40

What about Piper? Would be my number one choice for a girl

MikeUniformMike · 03/07/2018 11:10

How about Morna?

OliviaPopeRules · 03/07/2018 11:26

Harper is v common, lots of people copying the Beckhams. If you want a name that isn't common I defo wouldn't choose it (+ it is awful!!)

OliviaPopeRules · 03/07/2018 11:27

Any names from your family that might be unusual, like granny's/mum's maiden name that could be used as a first name?

MariaMadita · 03/07/2018 11:53

I like Maya and Mya (but would pronounce them quite differently) :)

Suggestions:
Mia, Mila, Marise, Mina, Tilda, Nina, Cora, Clara, Alice, Morag, Margot, Lilian, Lotta, Leona, Greta, Daisy, Flora, Cleo, Eliana/e, Eloise, Elena, Eleanor (nn Elle/Ella), Heather, Sadie.

youngestisapsycho · 03/07/2018 11:59

Myla is nice...

HJL2506 · 05/07/2018 06:04

I love Indie best from your list. Least common one too I'd say. If never met one and I've been to a tonne of baby groups with my son. Good luck!

elQuintoConyo · 05/07/2018 06:11

Leonora (nn Leo very cool)
Lamorna
Isadora (nn Isa or Dora)
Elvira (the i could be pronounced eye or eee)
Minette
Sally

Congratulations Flowers

Baubletrouble43 · 05/07/2018 06:33

LOVE Maya. Like Ella. Not keen on Harper, smacks of some One trying to copy victoria Beckham tbh. Amelia is nice but I like the spelling Emilia shortened to Em or Emmy.

Baubletrouble43 · 05/07/2018 06:34

Pp suggesting minette - that's lovely!

user25017 · 05/07/2018 10:33

Thanks for all the suggestions. And the good lucks and congratulations Smile

I like Myla also but a friends dd is Myla so unfortunately we can’t use it! Lots to consider there!

Harper is just the Beckham’s. You would set yourself up for years of “oh like Harper Beckham?” Imo. Ella and Amelia are extremely common. I don’t hear many Maya’s, it is primarily Mia or Amelia. Don’t hear many Elle’s and I’ve never met an Indie.
