Looking for girls and boys names that work well from birth to old age, suit any profession, from a shop worker through to a Prime Minister and are elegant, classic and not too faddish. It's the million dollar question I expect but I'm struggling a bit!

For boys, I’d say, Alexander, John, James, Edward, Tom, Michael, Daniel, Patrick, Henry, William.

For girls, Elizabeth, Catherine, Eleanor/Elinor, Isobel, Frances, Caroline, Hannah, Josephine

But there’s many more that are ‘classic’ and suit young and old alike.

I've just spotted my own name which is thrilling, as nobody EVER suggests my name Grin

needtogiveitablow · 29/06/2018 19:18

We have Matt and Kate (Matthew and Katherine). We chose these for exactly the same reasons as the OP suggests!

Margaret and Marjorie are both very old classic names, but not common these days. They're nice and probably due a comeback.

Forgot to come back and thank you all for these. We're still undecided but a few more on the shortlist.
