Norah by itself or as a nickname for Eleanor?

Dh and I are both agreed that we love Norah, and want to call our dd that, but we can't decide whether to make it a nickname for Eleanor, so that she has other options in the future (Eleanor/Nell/Ellie).

Do you think Norah needs a full name on the birth certificate, or is it enough of a name by itself.

Never heard it as a nickname for Eleanor but I'm sorry OP I really don't like it. There are so many lovely names for girls but this one just sounds ugly. Not that my choice should matter to you in the slightest of course. And maybe it's because I'm of the generation that equates Norah with Norah Batty and her apron, curlers and wrinked stockings...

Had I been named Norah I'd have been submitting a deed poll as soon as I turned 18. Now Eleanor I would have loved!

AnotherRoadsideAttraction · 26/06/2018 00:00

Norah is a gorgeous name. Eleanor is too fussy and overused.

myrtleWilson · 26/06/2018 00:06

We have a smallish Norah in our family and she is lovely and it really suits her. it is a fabulous name!

TroubledLichen · 26/06/2018 01:05

Norah/Nora is lovely. Much prefer the Nora spelling though.

Muddlingalongalone · 26/06/2018 01:09

Nora (without an h for preference)

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 26/06/2018 07:36

Norah. I find Eleanor really clunky. And she'd be called Ellie at school. Sorry Eleanor mums

Absolutely not true Smile

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 26/06/2018 07:39

I’d use Eleanor.

I prefer it as Nora.

ABitOTT · 26/06/2018 09:45

My great great gran was a Norah. Not shortened version of anything so yes you could use it. Not really my cup of tea but if you love it why not?

Babbaganoush · 26/06/2018 10:01

Norah is beautiful and I definitely see it as a name in its own right and not a nickname.

I think as hard as you try Eleanor will naturally be shortened to Ellie/El by some which is fine if you are happy with that as well.

dancingunicorns123 · 26/06/2018 10:26

Elonorah?

MikeUniformMike · 26/06/2018 17:32

That's not a name.

dancingunicorns123 · 26/06/2018 18:10

@MikeUniformMike what isn't?

MikeUniformMike · 26/06/2018 18:11

Elonorah.

TaggieRR · 26/06/2018 18:13

I would definitely go with Eleanor to give your dd a choice when she’s olde

MariaMadita · 26/06/2018 18:20

Eleonora (or Leonora) nn Nora is really nice imo :)

MikeUniformMike · 26/06/2018 18:31

Eleonora is awful. Use Norah, Nora, Eleanor, Elinor, Leonora or Eleanora but not some clunky made up name.

DangerMouse17 · 26/06/2018 18:35

Eleanor is more elegant and not over-used at all. I have never come across anyone with this name (only Elena's who have been Greek or Spanish).

hotchips · 26/06/2018 18:39

I was given a full name but always known by a nickname that has a different starting letter. It's more annoying than anything. E.g having to get work email addresses changed to the name I'm known as, having people who don't know me properly address me by a name I don't recognise as mine, cheques written to mrs wrong initial hotchips etc... Just minor annoyances in the grand scheme of things, but unnecessary. Just give her the name you intend to call her.

dancingunicorns123 · 26/06/2018 19:25

@MikeUniformMike yes it is I know two- one Elonorah and one Elonora

MikeUniformMike · 26/06/2018 19:27

Oh OK. Can't say I like it.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 26/06/2018 19:27

Elonorah looks made up.

MikeUniformMike · 26/06/2018 19:34

It makes me think 'Ello Norah. Better than Flamin' Norah I suppose.

KitNCaboodle · 26/06/2018 20:33

My nanny was called Nora. Actually Honora, which we didn’t know until she died!
I wish I called my daughter Nora but wasn’t brave enough 12 years ago. Instead she has the middle name ‘Honor’

MikeUniformMike · 27/06/2018 13:23

Honora is nice.

FutureDays · 27/06/2018 13:27

Norah on its own, I prefer it with the h on the end.
I am biased though as I have a Norah.
