What are the most overused baby names you know at the moment?

Trying to decide on a name for DC2 at the moment and would like something that won't seem "dated" in so many years to come.

There's a few names I keep hearing pop up at baby groups etc that feel a bit "faddy" and "of the moment" and would like to avoid that if possible. Hoping to avoid a name that becomes the Tracey, Sharon, David or Gary etc of this generation.

I've noticed a lot of names hyphenated with Rose, (which is an absolutely beautiful name) but kind of has the shine taken off it when its so overused in various combinations.

What names make you think "oh, not another one!?"

Baubletrouble43 · 13/07/2018 19:31

I agree whitesea. Both my dts have names that are always in top 20 but don't date as have been popularish forever.

RuthW · 13/07/2018 20:26

Parker for a boy and Isabelle/Isabella for a girl.

Whitesea · 15/07/2018 11:38

I’ve never met or heard of anyone called Parker other than American tv programmes.

Vanillaradio · 15/07/2018 22:41

With girls ds's age (4) it's Olivia, Sophia and Amelia. New babies Eva/Isla/Ava.
Don't seem to be as many trends with the boys, maybe Jacob and Jack.
Having said that, ds starts school in September, there is another child with ds' top 50 name.( I have only met one other his age previously)and only one dc with any of the above names, so you never know.......

AgentCooper · 15/07/2018 22:44

I think Ava and Ella are going to sound really dated in future. It's a shame, both very nice names but so over-used.

For boys I know loads of Finns and Jacks.

LexieLulu · 15/07/2018 23:03

My son is called Luke and is the only one starting his primary school of 120 kids...

Yet I know 4 Lucas's his age.
Lucas is much more popular than Luke now.

I also know a lot of Theodores /Theo, Isobel/la, and J boy names

Pressuredrip · 16/07/2018 15:17

Elsie/Ella/Evie/Evelyn/Eva/Eleanor/Ellie
Ruben/Reuben
Freya
Amber
Millie/Milly/Amelia
Ezra
Harper
Poppy
Lily
Ethan
Daisy
Olivia
Arlo
Scarlett
Jax
Archie
Noah

They are the ones that are so popular and won't age well unlike George/Oliver/Jack/Harry/Henry/Charlotte/Ben etc that I think are dull but at least more timeless.

UnlawfulBananaPeeler · 16/07/2018 16:03

Evie. Which is my little girls name and was so uncommon where she was born till we moved back to England 🤦🏻‍♀️
Amelia, Alexis/Alexa, anything hyphenated with Rose/May/Mae (though I like Mae on it’s own) Ava.

Boys names like Theo/Leo, Toby, Harley ect

Shampooeeee · 18/07/2018 11:48

Sofia
Isla
Rowan
Isabella
Amelia/ Amelie
Grace

Theo
Ethan
Ezra
Ben
Jude (often accompanied by the hashtag #heyjude on SM)

15 years ago, the only Henrys and Georges I met were public schoolboys but now it seems popular across the board.

Mercedes519 · 19/07/2018 13:27

That darkgreener site is fascinating. It turns out my DC both have names that are declining. They are both not unusual names, much more on the classic aide.

Good to go against a trend, I have never been fashionable Grin

When will ONS release 2017s statistics?

Svanhildur · 03/08/2018 21:32

DD's name has been mentioned a lot here, though we spell it slightly differently (not weirdly, just the correct spelling for where we live). But that's actually the main reason we chose it, because now when we go to England everyone finds it familiar and easy. There are benefits to popular names, especially when there are international factors in play!

QuilliamCakespeare · 03/08/2018 21:36

Matilda
Rose (as a middle name) - I know at least 5 under age 5 who have this
Emily

Jack
Oliver
Noah

QuilliamCakespeare · 03/08/2018 21:36

Oh and Mia

QuilliamCakespeare · 03/08/2018 21:38

And Teddy. I know three!

Svanhildur · 03/08/2018 21:40

The most overused names here are Katrín, Kristín, Júlía, Eva for girls and maybe Arnar for boys, though boys' names actually seem more diverse in our area.

Never met another one of either of my kids' names, though that's partly luck because they aren't that unusual.

purplecorkheart · 03/08/2018 21:54

Kate
Ava
Sarah

Madeline18 · 04/08/2018 11:47

Freddie, Max, Lily and Charlotte.

5000KallaxHoles · 04/08/2018 21:48

Zack Olivia Isabella and Theo are about half my kids classmates ticked off. Also isla and Harry.

ReginaPhalange89 · 05/08/2018 22:36

I'm surprised actually , I thought my 2 girls names would pop up a lot on this list but think I only seen them once each !

I like "normal/traditional" names. Although when choosing both my girls names I didn't know of any others, or think they'd be popular at the time. Seems like that happens a lot ! You think you're choosing a name that isn't too common but suddenly that year it ends up very popular!

One of my girls is a Phoebe, hadn't heard of a single Phoebe my whole way through school, as a grown up even working in dentistry where you really see how popular a name has gotten. When I had my Phoebe all the midwives commented on not having heard it for years and they all loved it.... Since then I've heard of a couple others 🙈 but do you know what, I adore the name, and had for years before I even considered getting pregnant. So no way I'd have changed it . And I'd much rather have a name that might end up a bit common than having a ridiculous name that sounds made up, or that I have to correct constantly 😂😂😂

KERALA1 · 06/08/2018 07:39

Why do people all pick the same names? There are lots of great "normal" names that aren't two a penny - Phoebe as above, Miranda, Susannah, Zoe, Tessa. But no, Amelia, Eve, Isla or Lily get chosen. Super dull!

MariaMadita · 06/08/2018 08:01

Florence, Alfie, Albie, Archie, Eva/Ava/Evie, Gracie, Ollie, Jack, Rose or Mae/May (as middle names)
