What are the most overused baby names you know at the moment?

Trying to decide on a name for DC2 at the moment and would like something that won't seem "dated" in so many years to come.

There's a few names I keep hearing pop up at baby groups etc that feel a bit "faddy" and "of the moment" and would like to avoid that if possible. Hoping to avoid a name that becomes the Tracey, Sharon, David or Gary etc of this generation.

I've noticed a lot of names hyphenated with Rose, (which is an absolutely beautiful name) but kind of has the shine taken off it when its so overused in various combinations.

What names make you think "oh, not another one!?"

When I named my son his name wasn't very popular, now there's at least 1 or 2 others in his class with the same name. This is the same for my daughter. Loved it every since I was little, now everyone's calling their child the same.

Round here the most popular names are Oliver, Alfie, Logan, Lilly, Grace.

pinyata · 28/06/2018 23:09

Aria ... we get it you've seen Game of Thrones too 🙄

Mumwotdrums · 28/06/2018 23:20

Surprised by the name Arlo being so popular. My son goes to school with one and I thought it was really unusual!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 28/06/2018 23:41

If you're looking for a classic non dated name for a boy. That suits right through life. You can't go wrong with James. Yes its very popular. However it's not faddy.
Other classic boys names.

Agree with all these! I feel like I do hear the same names all the time. It doesn't stop me liking them though!

Dd1 is called Cerys which I thought was unusual, but there is another in her y1 class!

JugglingMuggle · 29/06/2018 00:05

Amelia, Charlotte, Elsie, Lily, Isabella, Olivia, Eva, Sophie,

Harry, jack, Charlie, Joshua, Noah, Toby,

Rosie2356 · 29/06/2018 04:57

You are so right with the 'rose' part.... Shame as was my maiden name and would have wanted to incorporate it.... I had boys tho! The most popular i have heard is Noah or Jacob for boys and Millie and Emily for girls.

marylandmary · 29/06/2018 05:18

Oscar
Aurora
Jago (three at nursery!)

dustarr73 · 29/06/2018 06:33

I have a Logan,he's 8.My other son who is 7 has 2 Logans in his class. He is Zak, theres also another Zac in his class.
Theres a few more Logans scattered around where we live.

The only advice i would give is just call the child a name you love.

ItsClemFandangoCanYouHearMe · 29/06/2018 06:59

Just scanning for my kids names 😁

Round here there's a lot of Oliver's and lots of girls names like Evie, Eva, Ava etc. I loved Evelyn but it was of the same branch so i gave it a miss.

ballroompink · 29/06/2018 08:24

All the girls' names that have already been mentioned but particularly Something-May/Mae, Ella, Evie, Lily, Amelia, etc. I think Harper and Ava will really mark girls out as being born at a particular time.

Boys: Arlo, Jacob, Archie, Charlie. We have a Reggie and a Frank at DS's school - think those are also very 'faddy'.

I already think of certain names as being typical names of today's teenagers which marks them out as early 2000s fads:

Chloe
Molly
Maddie
Megan
Joshua
Connor
Ryan
etc.

I have a Logan and a Zach too!

My Logan is 17 though and when he was born everyone said how weird and unusual his name was. Now there are loads of them.

There are a couple of other Zachs we know but again think mine was named before it hit major popularity.

I like to think we set the trend WinkGrin

Enwi · 29/06/2018 10:52

@pinyata

Aria ... we get it you've seen Game of Thrones too 🙄
——
But obviously not read it as her name is Arya Grin

BounceAndClimb · 29/06/2018 11:24

Noah, Jack/Jackson, Zac, Arlo, Reggie.

Isabella, Sophia, Ava, Mia, Ella, Cora, Amelia.

Girls names ending in A seem to be the majority of DDs class.

Though saying that one of my DCs names is on that list, and I love it even though its a popular name.

I know a Peter and a Mary baby/toddler and even though they're 'not overused' names in this generation I prefer a lot of the currently common names, I'd just go for a name you like regardless of popularity.
There was 4 other girls in my secondary school year group with my name and I still like it.

trueblueari · 29/06/2018 11:26

I think Aria may be coming from Pretty Little Liars and Arya is from Game of Thrones.
They both seem to be popular in other parts of the UK but I haven't met a little Aria/Arya here in Scotland.
I'm glad it hasn't blown up too much here as my first name is similar!

dustarr73 · 29/06/2018 11:29

ColinsVeryJolly we got in ahead of the packGrin

dingdongdigeridoo · 29/06/2018 11:48

I don’t think Aria/Arya is necessarily a game of thrones thing. My friend has an Aria, named because her parents are really into opera and classical music.

Enwi · 29/06/2018 12:29

My little girl is nicknamed Aria. Coincidentally our dog is also called Ghost. People must think we are game of thrones obsessed but neither name was picked with it in mind! Smile

DonutCone · 29/06/2018 17:17

Every boy under 6 seems to be called Henry. Literally, all of them.

SidTheSquirrel · 29/06/2018 19:37

@@MikeUniformMike
Jenson, Lewis and Sebastian are all formula 1 drivers

Joeybee · 29/06/2018 22:46

sonnyboo · 01/07/2018 13:58
