It's a nice name for a new baby brother.... but not for a grown man. Call him Bear as a nickname but give him a name that is suitable for his whole life.

dinosaurkisses · 23/06/2018 16:05

Lovely nickname, but it’s one of those names that the child would go through life having to explain their quirky name.

Also, it would suit a big burly personal trainer or rugby player, but I’d feel sorry for a meek, slightly built man with such a “big” name.

Sophwalms · 23/06/2018 16:09

I know its difficult we call my other son noah bear as his nickname. My partner loves it aswell x

Up to you, if you like it then use it. Or Edward or Theodore, both have Teddy as a nickname which could easily be Bear. If you even see what I mean, I’m beyond tired.

MiniCooperLover · 23/06/2018 16:14

You'll just seem like you're copying Cheryl Whateverhersurnameisthesedays .. don't do it. Give the child a name they can actually use as a grown up when they're looking for work.

Jj2431 · 23/06/2018 16:15

Don't do it. Find a name that means bear and use it as a nickname

octoberfarm · 23/06/2018 17:12

I agree with PP, I think I'd probably go for either Edward or Theodore, both of which would have Bear as a perfectly reasonable nickname option whilst giving him other options if he wasn't such a fan of Bear once he'd grown up. Congrats on your pregnancy!

JaretsGirlfren · 23/06/2018 17:14

Edward Bear!

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 23/06/2018 17:38

I think it's a good idea to remember you're not naming a baby, you're naming a person. Bear might sound cute when he's little but he eventually has to go to Secondary school. Think how daft it will sound when he's 40.

Verbena87 · 23/06/2018 17:46

I think don’t do it.

Arthur, Bernard, and Swithun all alledegedly mean ‘bear’ / ‘strong as a bear’.

I love Swithun, but was banned by my husband who said it was too weird.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 23/06/2018 17:56

I know an Arthur known as Bear??

CloudCaptain · 23/06/2018 17:57

Bear Grylls seems to get by fine.
Go for it.

letsallhaveanap · 23/06/2018 17:59

Could you use Bear as a middle name? Or if used as the first use a very traditional middle name so that he has the option of the fun name and the serious name to use as an adult

AHintOfStyle · 23/06/2018 18:00

Bear Grylls is really called Edward.

BexleyRae · 23/06/2018 18:01

Bear Grylls real name is Edward

Fabricwitch · 23/06/2018 18:05

Love it for a child, but I too would be leaning towards using it as a nickname for something more grown up

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 23/06/2018 18:06

I would hate to be a man called Bear.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 23/06/2018 18:07

Bear Grylls can switch back to Ed as soon as he wants. He has options.

Elkcuhc56 · 23/06/2018 18:11

I like it!

BlancheM · 23/06/2018 18:19

What do you think? I wouldn't personally but either way I would urge you not to go along with a name other people like. You're the mother.

Sophwalms · 23/06/2018 18:29

I really like bear its cute but its just when my baby is older. I wanted other opinions as i love it but wanted to see how other people reacted

Paranoixia · 23/06/2018 18:49

You're not naming a baby, you're naming a person.

Can you imagine a barrister or an accountant callled Bear? Of course not. It's a family nickname for a small child, not a proper name.

Only a child with celebrity parents could pull off a name like Bear. Any normal kid would get bullied for that name from year 2/3 onwards.

I know a few people whose parents gave them ridiculous names like Bear, and they all grew up to hugely resent their parents. One of them has gone NC.

Adambarlow · 23/06/2018 18:51

Bear is pathetic

Polly2345 · 23/06/2018 20:16

Use it as a middle name

Icklepup · 23/06/2018 22:52

Middle name
