Made the mistake of telling people my favourite girl's name. Opinions please.

I'm expecting a baby girl in October, and there is one clear name I like - Tessa. However, when I tell friends and family I don't seem to be getting a positive response. What are your thoughts?

I already have one child called Jack and our surname is fussy and double-barrelled, so something shorter suits it. If you have any suggestions as well as responses to the name Tessa that could be helpful.

Prefer Tess to Tessa. It doesn't matter how anybody else reacts though - it will soon become her name.

Tiredspice2 · 02/06/2018 08:05

Thats a lovely name.

NutCase82 · 02/06/2018 08:06

I love Tessa. I had mixed reactions to my favourite name and the dad wouldn't let me use it at all, I was allowed to use the abbreviated version as a middle name. I regret it daily. She's 9 months old and it honestly upsets me so much. Please don't listen to people. Call her your favourite name and sod the lot of them!! Wish I had.

leghoul · 02/06/2018 08:06

I think the best thing is to never tell people your name choices until baby has arrived. People always give opinions.
All that matters is do you/ your DH/P like the name? I know a very nice Tessa who goes by Tess

Arriettyborrower · 02/06/2018 08:07

I love it, haven’t heard it for ages but it’s simple, ageless and unusual without being usual IYKWIM!

Ignore, my mum was unbelievably rude about ds4’s name and that was after he was born 😂, she likes it now.

robotcartrainhat · 02/06/2018 08:07

I think its lovely! And yeah you should never tell people the name before the baby arrives because theres then always those who think its up for debate.

Kescilly · 02/06/2018 08:08

I think it's a darling name, sounds perfect with what you've described.

Arriettyborrower · 02/06/2018 08:08

Unusual without being unusual that should say..

Choccywoccyhooha · 02/06/2018 08:08

It's a lovely name: simple, classic, yet rarely used.
Ignore what others are saying, once your daughter is here she will become her name and people's reactions will change. A few family members passed comment on our choice of name before my son was born, but now they all love it and agree that it suits him.

NoSquirrels · 02/06/2018 08:09

It’s lively. Ignore any non-reactions - when the baby arrives her name will fit her and you’ll get the enthusiasm then!

deptfordgirl · 02/06/2018 08:10

Love love love Tess. Not so keen on Tessa, not sure why!

Onceuponatimethen · 02/06/2018 08:10

Gorgeous name!

hildabaker · 02/06/2018 08:15

Lovely name. As others have said, who cares what others think?

BestBeforeYesterday · 02/06/2018 08:15

It's a classic name, nothing weird, so don't let other people's reactions put you off. You could be giving your daughter the most popular girls' name of the year and there would still be people who didn't like it.

TellMeDinosaurFacts · 02/06/2018 08:17

It’s lovely!

ShutTheFridgeUp · 02/06/2018 08:19

It was on my girls list. I think it's a lovely name.

RedPandaMama · 02/06/2018 08:19

I love Tessa, would have been one of my choices.

BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy · 02/06/2018 08:19

I like Tess - it's lovely

kingseat2016 · 02/06/2018 08:20

I love both tessa and tess.

Popskipiekin · 02/06/2018 08:20

I think it’s a lovely name. My parents had slightly negative reaction to the names of both our DC - one we told before, one we only revealed after he’d been born. They now claim to have forgotten this and say they’re the best names ever Grin your friends/family will adapt.

NancyJoan · 02/06/2018 08:21

I love it. And funny enough, was reading a book by Tessa Hadley this week, and thought what a lovely name it was, and that if I were to have another DD, it would be on my list.

Cuppaand2biscuits · 02/06/2018 08:24

I really like the name. I met a Tessa recently and wondered why it's not used more often. As others have said it's classic and timeless.

3luckystars · 02/06/2018 08:30

Well it’s too late for you now but hopefully this thread will help someone else in the future.
Never EVER tell your names to anyone beforehand

Because this is always the reaction. You think people are interspersed but they just try to put their feelings on to you and influence your choice.

I just wanted to wish you the best. If you like the name then pick it and everyone will love it (afterwards)

BeyondThePage · 02/06/2018 08:30

My SIL is Thérèse- shortened to Tessa (why? I do not know -Thérèse is lovely...) though she is French/Italian so says Tessa as Tesssssssss - a, which sounds very pleasant...

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 02/06/2018 08:31

I'm also due in October and it's on our girls names list Smile I think it's a lovely name.
