We are thinking of calling our number two girl Sula. It’s the name of a little Scottish Hebridean island and we love the Hebrides. And also means “peace little she bear” in Hebrew which I think is kind of cute too. Opinions please! Any downfalls I’ve not thought of?
Delphiniumum · 29/05/2018 19:11
I think it's very cute. Be aware that it is a character in "Bing" on Cbeebies though.
MikeUniformMike · 29/05/2018 19:14
Sula looks very pretty. Is it pronounced Soola? Might get shortened to Su/Sue.
shelleybee · 29/05/2018 19:16
I'm sure Sula is a make of sugar-free sweet.
MustBeThursday · 29/05/2018 19:16
Sula is a pretty name and the meaning is very sweet. The only negative thought for me is it's the name of the elephant character in Bing. I can't think of any other negative connections
GoForthSon · 29/05/2018 19:18
I'm sure Sula is a make of sugar-free sweet.
It is, lovely as a name though and especially the meaning.
Whatififall · 29/05/2018 19:23
My first thought was the character in Bing too.
But I love the meaning of it and bloody Bing Bear won’t be on tv forever so it will probably just be a short while that it coincides.
Rainatnight · 29/05/2018 19:27
Bing's friend. But it is sweet.
Miloarmadillo2 · 29/05/2018 19:27
Bing, to every parent of a preschool child.
ABCFamily · 29/05/2018 19:28
Sula is pretty. It reminds me of the Toni Morrison novel of the same name.
Sweetweemama · 29/05/2018 19:28
Thanks all! Yea I figure it’s a name for life and everyone will have forgotten about Bing before too long. But I don’t want her to be associated with that as a wee girl. Hmm, will need to think about that one. I’m not too bothered by the sugar free sweet though. Still only 29 weeks so we can sit on it for a while!
greendale17 · 29/05/2018 19:30
Sounds like an African name. Nice name
Polyannah · 29/05/2018 19:30
First thought was Sulu. Star trek.
Then Bing.
DramaAlpaca · 29/05/2018 19:31
My DC are older & I've never heard of Bing apart from on here.
I think Sula is really pretty & I like the Hebridean associations.
MaryPoppinsPenguins · 29/05/2018 19:32
I only know one sula and she’s a dog... so that’s what it brings to mind.
butlerswharf · 29/05/2018 19:35
I think of Bing right away and so will her contemporaries as they'll most likely grow up watching it too.
Pooshy · 29/05/2018 19:35
Lovely!
MeetYouAtGreggs · 29/05/2018 19:37
It is so pretty. The only time I’ve ever heard it is Bing’s little elephant pal though.
Sametimesameplace · 29/05/2018 19:38
I know someone with Sula as a surname.
Cosmoa · 29/05/2018 19:38
I think it's absolutely beautiful!!
Frogscotch7 · 29/05/2018 19:40
It’s a great name. Reminds me of the book A Song of Sula.
daisypond · 29/05/2018 19:41
I like it. I didn't know about the Hebridean island. I thought of Bing first. But doesn't it come from the Old Norse "sula" meaning gannet/booby, which is maybe not quite so nice? I know nothing about the birds, though - maybe they're lovely.
Sweetweemama · 29/05/2018 19:43
I know nothing about birds either, Thanks for that!
Sweetweemama · 29/05/2018 19:44
Yea I guess they will. My wee girl isn’t really into Bing so I have heard of it but it isn’t a strong association. Clearly is for others tho, I’ll think about it! Thanks
foxycleopauper · 29/05/2018 19:46
I heard someone refer to a sweaty upper lip as a Sula once, so that's what it makes me think of
joan12 · 29/05/2018 19:47
Beautiful! Fwiw my eldest has the name of a TV character that happened to be very very popular when he was about 0-4 but absolutely no-one makes the association now - ten years on. I wouldn't worry about it personally. Growing up I also knew an Anastasia shortened to Sula.
