Baby will be going to Welsh school but our surname isn't a Welsh one so we want a name that is Welsh but not one that is massively Welsh and won't go with the surname.
Eg bethan is fine but Isyllt a bit OTT.

Info is Spanish, Petra is Greek/Eastern European and Merry is Irish

Posted without coffee. Fair point. Very fair. and I am Welsh

Cariadxx · 28/05/2018 16:45

@Mike yes our Llew is actually Llewellyn.

Non is nice although maybe a little short for our surname. Dylan is definitely out as DH can't stand it pronounced wrongly. Same with Seren. Harri is nice but there's loads of them round here and MIL has a speech impediment and can't say R so that also restricts us a little Confused

Llewellyn? That's a surname pronounced Lou-Ellin

eatyourveg · 28/05/2018 21:04

Why has no-one suggested Gerallt?
Alternatively Gruff, Gwilym, Idris or Elis

FizzyGreenWater · 29/05/2018 15:14

Rhiannon is lovely and less popular these days.

Talfryn for a boy is great - Tal is a fab shortening.

MikeUniformMike · 29/05/2018 15:37

But what if Talfryn was really short? Would he get called Talfyr? Tal Bach?
Talfryn means Tall Hill or Hill-End.

MissWilmottsGhost · 29/05/2018 15:45

Ioan.

At least I think it is welsh.

I used to know a boy called Ioan and always loved the name and wanted it if I had had a boy.

Bamaluz · 29/05/2018 16:45

I don't think anyone has suggested Manon yet.

MikeUniformMike · 29/05/2018 16:57

Ioan is the welsh for John.
Other forms of John are Siôn, Ifan, Ieuan, Iwan, Sionyn and Siencyn.
Manon is nice but might not go with some surnames.

FizzyGreenWater · 29/05/2018 17:56

Yep a tiny Talfryn might be a bit like having a lumpen, lumbering Grace.

Manon is lovely but crap to shorten.

Caradog?

Tiredmum100 · 29/05/2018 18:13

My friends son has a very welsh first name and a very English second name. It's fine! I'd go for a name you really like!

MikeUniformMike · 29/05/2018 18:26

Caradog will get said as Cradog. Cadwgan is cute. Cadwaladr is good too. I also quite like Goronwy, shortened to Gron.
I know several Manons and haven't heard it get shortened.

FizzyGreenWater · 29/05/2018 20:00

Cynddylan!

Also - Gomer. Now there's one that hasn't come back yet...

MikeUniformMike · 29/05/2018 20:03

Cynddylan is a no from me - cyn sounds like cun (as in with a t on the end), and non-welsh speakers will say 'Sindy-lun', 'Sin-dillon' or 'WTF'.
Gomer is cute in a quirky way.

welshywelshnames · 30/05/2018 00:02

i've name changed, because my childrens names are massively outing!
I'm welsh speaking in wales, with an english father to my children.
my children are Cerys Rose, Cai Owen and Eirys Hâf. it works well with their english surname in my opinion and the english side of the family can pronounce them, with only minor differences in dd2s first name (they say iris, i say more like ay-ris, she answers to both happily).

welshywelshnames · 30/05/2018 00:03

MrsMrsMrsMrs · 30/05/2018 08:37

I know a lovely little boy called Emrys - just remembered that. It’s a name that I wouldn’t have chosen but it’s really grown on me!

MrsMrsMrsMrs · 30/05/2018 08:39

Ioan has also become more popular around here. What about Iolo?

Elphame · 30/05/2018 20:36

Emrys is my grandfathers name!

Has anyone suggested Tesni yet?

Petalflowers · 31/05/2018 08:34

Just remembered these names.

Emlyn
Griffith
Caradoc
Steffan

Potcallingkettle · 31/05/2018 08:43

Teleri and Iestyn are both names of Welsh children I know living in England. Lovely names and lovely children.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 31/05/2018 08:45

Eluned
Beca
Liliwen

Alwyn
Rhyddian
Enos

Cariadxx · 31/05/2018 11:18

I had a pony called caradoc when I was young so that's out!
I like Manon and Llinos.

OP posts:
MikeUniformMike · 31/05/2018 12:42

Liliwen doesn't work, because of how the accent in welsh falls on the penultimate syllable.
Enos looks made up.

KellyanneConway · 31/05/2018 12:47

I know English children Medi, Cerys, Evan and Griffith, love all these names.
