Not too 'Welsh' Welsh names

Cariadxx · 27/05/2018 11:27

Baby will be going to Welsh school but our surname isn't a Welsh one so we want a name that is Welsh but not one that is massively Welsh and won't go with the surname.
Eg bethan is fine but Isyllt a bit OTT.

We have an Alys and wanted Seren for our second but had a boy. I agree that boys names are harder.
Has anyone suggested Angharad or is that really old fashioned?

Cariadxx · 27/05/2018 18:16

Hubby is a teacher and has vetoed several names from experience!

Elin

Buddug and Dwynwen are both lovely.
Tomos and Steffan are fine.
Rhys was also popular when I was at school, and I really like it said the welsh way (not Rees).

Cariadxx · 27/05/2018 18:35

Yes Rees is not nice. Rhys much nicer.

Esme

WTF? Esme is French, not welsh!

Osopolar · 27/05/2018 18:40

If you live in Wales and speak Welsh I really wouldn't worry about the name being too Welsh for your surname. I have a very Welsh name and a very English surname, has never been commented on. If you like the Welsh Welsh names then go for it. My favs are Emrys and Eirlys :)

Lots of Isabel/Isabelle/Isabella’s at DD’s welsh medium school. They’re still not welsh names!

Dobbythesockelf · 27/05/2018 19:02

Right ok I get it I made a mistake. I didn't know Esme was a French name. I made a presumption bases on the Welsh people I know. I have pointed out I am English not Welsh.

Lots of lovely names mentioned, but some very very popular ones- My dds are in welsh school- there are at least three serens in every year, and an eleri too. Dylan is the male equivalent.

MikeUniformMike · 27/05/2018 19:53

Erin gets used by welsh people. Erina too, but maybe that's an older person's name.
I don't think there's a problem with Welsh first name and English surname, as long as they flow.
OP probably knows this but Lois in Wales is usually pronounced Loyce.

TittyGolightly · 27/05/2018 20:14

I think DH’s surname derived from Scotland. I think mine is Irish. He’s Emglish and wanted names his family would be able to pronounce. I’m Welsh, we live in Wales and I wanted to reflect that. We honeymooned in Italy and wanted to reflect that. So DD has Welsh, Italian, Irish and Scottish names! They flow nicely together though!

mamansnet · 27/05/2018 20:27

Llywelyn, or Llewelyn if you want the English version!

Glumglowworm · 27/05/2018 20:28

Celyn is one of my favourite welsh girls names

I also like Seren, Nia, and Sian

For boys I like Tomos and Rhys

MikeUniformMike · 27/05/2018 20:32

and definitely not Llewellyn.

Cariadxx · 27/05/2018 22:00

We have a Llew in the family already so that's out don't worry!

CAAKE · 27/05/2018 22:42

What about Lloyd? It's obviously Welsh but also very common as a surname, bank etc. 😂

KarineAimee · 28/05/2018 08:52

Thinking back to my Uni days in Wales, lots of the names mentioned already, but also met a lovely lady called Non which to my very English ear sounds fab! I also really liked the name Geraint for a boy.
