Not too 'Welsh' Welsh names

Baby will be going to Welsh school but our surname isn't a Welsh one so we want a name that is Welsh but not one that is massively Welsh and won't go with the surname.
Eg bethan is fine but Isyllt a bit OTT.

Another vote for Esyllt as its really lovely when shortened to Essie.

Llew's a brilliant name, but Llywelyn is the preferred full version.

Beautifulbridie · 28/05/2018 11:53

I think Dylan is very popular another way to spell it is Dylon

TittyGolightly · 28/05/2018 12:13

Dylon

WTF? That’s the brand name of a fabric dye.

MikeUniformMike · 28/05/2018 12:17

Isn't Dylon pronounced Dye-lon?
Dylan is overused and i dislike the Dillun pronunciation.

"Tegan is welsh for toy."

Yes, but as a name I think it means something like cherished thing.

TangelasVine · 28/05/2018 12:26

We have an English surname and it's not been a problem. I don't think it needs to match just pick a name you love.
Also we used a Welsh name that is supposedly easy for English people to pronounce and the short story is it isn't Grin so again I'd just go with what you love.

Gwenhwyfar · 28/05/2018 12:29

"Celyn is one of my favourite welsh girls names "

Celyn as a girl's name sounds like a translation though, people doing it because Holly is a girl's name in English. Celyn has the sound of a boy's name in Welsh.

Sophronia · 28/05/2018 12:34

Arianwen

Emlyn

leghoul · 28/05/2018 12:36

Alwen

Carys
Elen
Megan
Merry
Petra
Seren

sunnydayz78 · 28/05/2018 12:45

We have Lowri and Evan. If I had another (which I'm not) a girl would be Ffion but no idea for a boy Smile

MikeUniformMike · 28/05/2018 12:48

You're probably right Gwenhwyfar but the word tegan is welsh for toy and isn't welsh for anything else.
I'd say Celyn was a boy's name too but Holly is sometimes a boy's name.

I think that welsh names when there isn't a connection is a bit naff especially if mispronounced. Using a noun and assigning it a different meaning is a bit bonkers. (e.g. someone said that Osian was a welsh name meaning ocean, when it is the welsh form of Oisin)

TittyGolightly · 28/05/2018 12:48

Info is Spanish, Petra is Greek/Eastern European and Merry is Irish. Confused

adviceonthepox · 28/05/2018 12:48

I love these names for a girl

Megan
Seren
Cariad
Ffion
Tegan

These for a boy
Ieuan
Owen
Rhys
Dylan
Tomas
Hayek

adviceonthepox · 28/05/2018 12:49

Hayek??
Hywel

TittyGolightly · 28/05/2018 12:50

Tomos, not Tomas.

Hayek is Polish.

Gwenhwyfar · 28/05/2018 12:52

"You're probably right Gwenhwyfar but the word tegan is welsh for toy and isn't welsh for anything else. "

Well I've just said it means cherished thing, which you agreed with. I think that meaning is a bit archaic now, but kept in the name. Look at meaning 2 here for evidence:

Gwenhwyfar · 28/05/2018 12:53

Hywel is an older man's name. I can't imagine a baby Hywel.

Choccywoccyhooha · 28/05/2018 12:56

My favourite Welsh names are Teleri for a girl and Iolo for a boy.i would have loved to have used them, but we are English with a Welsh surname, it would have seemed very pretentious.

Petalflowers · 28/05/2018 13:04

Fionn
Carys
Sian
Bethan
Eleri
Rhiannon
Lowri
Eleri

Glen
Rhys/Reece
Dewi
dai
Gareth
glynn
Aled
Dylan

MikeUniformMike · 28/05/2018 13:24

Oh ok Gwenhwyfar. I still wouldn't use it as a name.
Fionn is not a welsh name Petal. Did you mean Ffion?

TittyGolightly · 28/05/2018 13:40

And it’s Glyn, not Glynn.

Notso · 28/05/2018 13:55

Most of my welsh speaking friends have named their children names that are not neccessarily Welsh but have spelled them Welsh. So names like Magi, Casi, Anni, Elyn, Alys, Sali, Harri, Tomos.
In the English speaking schools more Welsh names seem to be popular like Seren, Rhys, Gwen, Rhiannon, Clwyd, Ffion, Elis, Gryff, Osian, Deniol (sp).

MikeUniformMike · 28/05/2018 13:58

Deiniol? Are you in or near Bangor?
