Too popular?

Is the name Ezra too popular? We really wanted a Christian name if we have a boy (due in a few weeks). We already have a Grace, I was loving the name Ezra and was totally sold but now DH said that George Ezra is bugging him and is everywhere and it will probably get even more popular/look like we have named the baby after him.

I don't think it's too popular at the moment, but I think it's one of those names which will continue to rise in popularity over the next 5 or so years. I think Pretty Little Liars is a bigger contributor than George Ezra...

But I would assume an Ezra was Jewish before I'd assume he was a Christian. Ezra appears in the Hebrew Bible.

Sophronia · 24/05/2018 07:29

It’s #91 so not too popular

LovelyBranches · 24/05/2018 07:32

I have two young dc in nursery and there are no Ezra’s in their classes.

IHeartKingThistle · 24/05/2018 07:34

I've never mat one.

Hideandgo · 24/05/2018 07:35

Never heard of one.

BevBrook · 24/05/2018 07:38

I don’t think it will become that popular. I have heard of George Ezra but wouldn’t say he was everywhere! It’s also the name of the main character in Star Wars Rebels by the way.

KitNCaboodle · 24/05/2018 07:41

I’ve worked with children for 15+ years and never met one. Lovely name though

BertrandRussell · 24/05/2018 07:43

Isn't Ezra usually a Jewish name? Not that it matters, but you said you wanted a Christian name......

Kraggle · 24/05/2018 07:43

I know a new baby called Ezra but he’s the first and only one I’ve met.

SpectacularAardvark · 24/05/2018 07:47

No idea who George Ezra is but I haven't met an Ezra at any of the baby groups yet if that helps.

InkSnail · 24/05/2018 07:54

Old Testament names are more popular than 20+ years ago, but I haven't met any Ezras.

KitXi · 24/05/2018 07:57

I wouldn't say it's very popular, but it's very "of the moment" and trendy, so will date badly.
Similar to Felix and Milo from a few years back, never got "huge" but super trendy.

LastNightsMakeUp · 24/05/2018 08:38

I know of 2 baby Ezra's born in the last year. I do think it's going to be a bit 'of it's time.' It's lovely though

Cousinit · 24/05/2018 08:41

I only know of one and he's an adult. I think it's a nice name.

deptfordgirl · 24/05/2018 08:56

I wouldn't say it's very popular, think it was 99 on the ons list? But it seems quite 'now' (despite being biblical! ) and on the rise. It's nice though. How about Jonah, Elijah, Josiah?

deptfordgirl · 24/05/2018 08:57

Oh and I know 1 2 year old and 2 newborns (but thats in a church! )

ZebraKid71 · 24/05/2018 08:58

I know of a few, I don't think it's too popular... As pp though, I would assume Jewish.

bridgetreilly · 24/05/2018 09:48

I think it's a great choice. It's never going to be as popular as Grace!

lgh05 · 24/05/2018 10:20

Thank you all for your feedback, I really appreciate it, yeah surprisingly we are yet to meet another Grace even though it’s quite high on the name chart!

With regards to it being a Jewish name, it’s in the Old Testament so it’s the same books we use in Christianity (first half of it anyway) so I am not fussed about the Jewish links as essentially that’s where Christianity is born from, so it’s one of the same.

If this is a boy he will be having two middle names to honour family members, Ezra David Spencer... I do love it, it’s just with my DH saying that he is going off it, it just got me thinking! Hate doubting myself!

I know a couple of little Ezras... It's a lovely name though, I wouldn't let it put you off. I also know a Jonah which is biblical and less popular and still lovely I think

MikeUniformMike · 24/05/2018 13:34

I don't like it, and I think it will date.

Aussiemouse · 24/05/2018 13:56

Ezra's lovely. I'm not big on the Old Testament Name trend at the moment, as I find all the little Elijah's friends are having a bit much! (I think old man in fiery chariot!) Ezra though I think is just a nice name. I think of the chap from Pretty Little Liars too (hunky!) and have never heard of George Ezra. I've not met another little Ezra either (just many Elijah's and Noahs and the odd Micah, Reuben, Caleb etc).

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 24/05/2018 17:08

I know two babies and one preschooler called Ezra. I think it will date very quickly as it does seem to be having a surge in popularity. I just asked DH what he thinks of it and he said "it's a hipster name". He's very fussy though and has vetoed most of my name choices so far Grin

ManicPixieDream · 24/05/2018 17:18

I have a friend who is due in a few weeks and I know she is planning on calling her baby Ezra.

If you like it, go with it.

Buntysoven · 24/05/2018 23:11

I know an adult Ezra. I think it's a gorgeous exotic name.. like him! Wink
